The Milkweed Lands
The Milkweed Lands: A Portrait of One of North America's Most Overlooked Plants and the Diverse World It Supports | Eric Lee-Mäder
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Ecologist Eric Lee-Mäder and noted botanical artist Beverly Duncan have teamed up to create this unique exploration of the complex ecosystem that is supported by the remarkable milkweed plant, often over-looked or dismissed as a roadside weed. With stunning, up-close illustrations and engaging text, they trace every stage of the plant's changes and evolutions throughout the seasons, including germination, growth, flowering, and seed development. Simultaneously, they chronicle the lives of the many creatures whose lives are intertwined with the milkweed: monarch butterflies; soldier and queen butterflies; milkweed tussock moths; large and small milkweed bugs; milkweed weevils; bumble bees; goldfinches; and more. The delightful illustrations and illuminating text give the reader the feeling of browsing an avid naturalist's sketchbook, while also learning about different milkweed species, how to propagate milkweed in the garden, the industrial uses of milkweed, interesting milkweed relatives, and more.

I‘ve been interested in native gardening for several years now, especially to support pollinators. This seems like a picture book for adults, with full page illustrations that are beautiful and labeled with plant parts or other facts, each illustrated page facing a full page of text. Topics include habitat, insects, molds and other parasites, seed distribution, and way more.

There is one section about monarchs, but the star here is milkweeds. ðŸ‘

TheAromaofBooks Oooo this looks lovely!! I work at a small local orchard and we were just talking yesterday about planting a section of native wildflowers with a small walking path for our visitors to use. 5mo
Soubhiville @TheAromaofBooks that‘s a wonderful idea, and beneficial for wildlife and visitors both. 😠5mo

I love that my #bookspin and #doublespin share similar subject matter! How fun is that? Plus two nonfiction in the same month, I‘m not sure that‘s happened for me before. Thanks Sarah!

Harper @CoffeeNBooks ! This is a perfect housewarming gift, thank you so much! I love it. I often realize forgotten something I need to do before bed while I‘m laying there reading, and the triangle owl book support is the perfect place to rest my book for a moment while I do the things. ðŸ˜

I look forward to reading the beautiful book as well. 🦋ðŸ›ðŸŒ±ðŸ’š

Soubhiville @JenniferEgnor Schmetterling is my favorite (of the few I know) German word! I had Milk Weed planted in TX and once I own my own home again I plan to have some here in NC 🙂. 11mo

Soubhiville @Chelsea.Poole that‘s very sweet of you. Any idea if they grow ok in pots? I‘m in an apartment now, so no access to planting in real earth. 11mo
Chelsea.Poole @Soubhiville I believe they would! 11mo

4/5

This was a nice quick read about the milkweed plant and it's place in the American ecosystem. I thought the illustrations were particularly lovely showing the milkweed and the insects that feed on it in various life stages.

The milkweed is a displaced citizen in its own land. Where once it owned the continent, it‘s now a kind of vagrant, occupying the botanical equivalent of homeless encampments.
