Madonna
Madonna: A Rebel Life | Mary Gabriel
6 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
In this "lushly evocative" biography, award-winning author Mary Gabriel chronicles the meteoric rise and enduring influence of the greatest female pop icon of the modern era: Madonna (Booklist, starred review). With her arrival on the music scene in the early 1980s, Madonna generated nothing short of an explosionas great as that of Elvis or the Beatlestaking the nation by storm with her liberated politics and breathtaking talent. Within two years of her 1983 debut album, a flagship Macy's store in Manhattan held a Madonna lookalike contest featuring Andy Warhol as a judge, and opened a department called Madonna-land. But Madonna was more than just a pop star. Everywhere, fans gravitated to her as an emblem of a new age, one in which feminism could shed the buttoned-down demeanor of the 1970s and feel relevant to a new generation. Amid the scourge of AIDS, she brought queer identities into the mainstream, fiercely defending a person's right to love whomeverand be whoeverthey wanted. Despite fierce criticism, she never separated her music from her political activism. And, as an artist, she never stopped experimenting. Madonna existed to push past boundaries by creating provocative, visionary music, videos, films, and live performances that changed culture globally. Deftly tracing Madonnas story from her Michigan roots to her rise to super-stardom, master biographer Mary Gabriel captures the dramatic life and achievements of one of the greatest artists of our time.

Mehso-so

At over 800 pages (plus an author's note, prologue, epilogue, acknowledgments, bibliography, notes, and another 200+ pages of citations found online), this biography is beyond thorough. That Madonna's life and career could fill 800 pages wasn't a surprise; that much of the book felt like it flew by was. Toward the end the author runs out of steam, and the writing feels more defensive than revelatory. Overall it's a better reference than read.

I finally finished this Madonna tome- 1,000 pages and tiny print! But wow. It covered every aspect of her life- some stories I knew and some I learned. I feel like I grew up with Madonna and have always loved her fearlessness. I just saw her in concert last year and this chunkster really illustrates her impact on the world. The main issue was having a new Madonna song in my head after each chapter. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“When I first saw her, she had all these rags tied around her dress and all these accessories.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ When I say this biography is thorough, I‘m serious. Nearly 900 pages, or 42 hours on audio. Humble beginnings, fame, fashion, family, philanthropy. What a life! This sparked vivid memories of swinging on my T-Gym (remember those?) singing every word to “Like a Prayer.” I‘d worked so hard to memorize the lyrics. I was 8. I want to thank my parents for inadvertently not censoring me from Madonna. I loved her growing up.

fredthemoose I‘m looking forward to this one! 9mo
Bookzombie I‘m thankful my parents were oblivious to what I watched, listened to, and read too. 🙂 9mo
AileenRR I asked for and got the Like A Virgin album for my 7th or 8th birthday. Lucky that my dad looked past the racy cover 😬 9mo

britt_brooke @AileenRR Haha! I swear, parents had no clue back then. But I‘m also glad because I got to listen to a lot of good music! 😂 9mo
Ruthiella My parents did not censor my reading or my music, whether out of ignorance or wisdom, I don‘t know. But I thank them for it! 🙏 9mo
