A sweeping gothic fairytale romance for fans of A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer and Gallant by V.E. Schwab. Raised in a small village near the spirit-wood, Liska Radost knows that Magic is monstrous, and its practitioners, monsters. After Liska unleashes her own powers with devastating consequences, she is caught by the demon warden of the wood - the Leszy - who offers her a bargain: one year of servitude in exchange for a wish. Whisked away to his crumbling manor, Liska makes an unsettling discovery. She is not the first person to strike this bargain. And if she wants to survive the year and return home, she must unravel her host's spool of secrets and face the ghosts of his past. Those who enter the wood do not always return . . .

This is so my jam. Definitely has beauty and the beast vibes, with Russian fairytales. All of my favorite things!!! I know it‘s gonna be a 5 ⭐️ even without spice. 🤣

Really liked it. Stag reminded me of some of the imagery in the starless Sea. Enjoyable YA fantasy read. And I love my sentient houses! #sentienthouse

Bk20 of my 2024 #BookMail is another gorgeous edition. This novel is based on Eastern European mythology.Raised in a village near the spirit-wood, Liska knows magic is dangerous & its practitioners monstrous. After a deadly mistake, Liska travels into the dangerous wood guarded by a demon to steal a mythical fern flower. Pluck it and she can use its one wish to banish her own power. But to survive she has to face the secrets & ghosts of the past.

Meet the darker, gothier little sister of Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale—with a hint of Howl‘s Moving Castle! Rooted in Polish folklore and set in a wickedly magical wood full of dangers and wonders alike, this grim yet romantic young adult fantasy marks the debut of a writer to watch.
