The Other Great Game
The Other Great Game: The Opening of Korea and the Birth of Modern East Asia | Sheila Miyoshi Jager
6 posts | 1 read
Sheila Miyoshi Jager returns to the three-cornered contest among imperial Russia, China, and Japan over the Korean Peninsula. The battle to colonize Korea upended East Asian geopolitics, set great-power conflicts of the twentieth century in motion, and seeded internal rivalries that persist in the peninsulas division between North and South.

Purpleness Argh, I just realised I tagged the wrong book. I almost never have two books on the go at once, and I must gave just automatically searched up the one I had been reading most recently. 5mo

Texreader 😂 5mo
Texreader This looks interesting but very long. Would you recommend it? 5mo
Purpleness @Texreader Depends on what your tolerance for long detailed history is. I am enjoying it, but it there are lots of really detailed descriptions of diplomatic exchanges and battles, and it could have used a better editor in some parts. What I do like about it is that by talking about a whole period in detail like this, it can show the evolution of the situation in each of the main countries involved. 5mo

“One of the best-known struggles of the nineteenth century was the Great Game, when Russia‘s threat to British interests in India initiated a lasting rivalry and bloodshed that would continue until the beginning of the twentieth century”
