3✨ This book is set in Pakistan and we see two timelines. “Then and Now”. In Now we see a much older Rozeena living with decisions from secrets from the Then. One night 4 friends experience an event that changes their lives forever. I enjoyed the story and uncovering several different secrets as the timeline progressed in two different times. #OUABC
This is a family politics book. How choices made them affected today. Wasn‘t bad, didn‘t blow me away. Very heavy heartache. Then; right after Partition destroyed their lives. Now; The past comes back to haunt. These four friends made it hard for me to see their close connection. Especially those two girls. Had trouble connecting with them all. Zara (a side) was the most intriguing. Many revelations by the end, which was cut short.

Under the Tamarind Tree is a debut novel by Nigar Alam that explores the lives of four friends in Pakistan, whose choices are shaped by history, desire, and obligation. The novel spans from 1964 to 2019, and alternates between two timelines: “Then” and “Now”. The novel portrays the effects of the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, which forced millions of people to migrate and caused widespread violence and trauma.
I inherently hate fuckjng politics and that was literally what this book was full of. Was it a good book? Well yes, would I have picked it up on my own? No probably not. I didn‘t know it existed until it came in my once upon a book club box…. Also that ending to the book was a waste of space in my opinion like what?!! Idk if I‘ll ever pick up another one of Nigar Alams books but it was ok. If you don‘t like heavy politics then don‘t pick it up
