pickAfter taking a fisheries job in Massachusetts, Greg Skomal was able to set up a shark research program in the state. This put him in the perfect position to study the white sharks that started arriving in greater numbers starting in 2009. The writing is a little pedestrian, but the story is terrific and his enthusiasm for these animals shines through.
pickIf you‘re a Shark Week fan, this is for you. I‘m not a super shark fan, but Skomal‘s journey as a scientist and his work with the Great White sharks that have recently returned to the waters around Cape Cod was interesting. I found the parts where he was trying to balance commercial interests with scientific ones the most interesting. And a bit about the ethics of marine science was cool too.
pickThis was a memoir of how Greg got started in his search for white sharks in the Atlantic. The dialogue was a bit confusing at times between the “two” authors. It‘s all written as one story, long winded. Decent storytelling. Took 6 hours to read 340 pages. But it was nice with the implants of shark knowledge. More worth it if a major fan of Greg. Most interesting was the creation of the AWSC. Love the place

Frequent contributor, Dr. Greg Skomal co-authors this look-back at his career & the resurgence of Great White Sharks in the Atlantic over the course of his career “in sharks”. With plenty of honor given to the fictional Matt Hooper, the author gets a little big for his britches at times, though I do appreciate his passion for sharks & enthusiasm for saving them from the real monsters of humanity!
