From the best-selling author of The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, a searing multi-generational novel--set in the 1980s in racially and politically turbulent Philadelphia and in the tiny town of Bonaparte, Alabama--about a mother fighting for her sanity and survival "A fine, powerful book." --Marilynne Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Gilead From the moment Ava Carson and her ten-year-old son, Toussaint, arrive at the Glenn Avenue family shelter in Philadelphia 1985, Ava is already plotting a way out. She is repulsed by the shelter's squalid conditions: their cockroach-infested room, the barely edible food, and the shifty night security guard. She is determined to rescue her son from the perils and indignities of that place, and to save herself from the complicated past that led them there. Ava has been estranged from her own mother, Dutchess, since she left her Alabama home as a young woman barely out of her teens. Despite their estrangement and the thousand miles between them, mother and daughter are deeply entwined, but Ava can't forgive her sharp-tounged, larger than life mother whose intractability and bouts of debilitating despair brought young Ava to the outer reaches of neglect and hunger. Ava wants to love her son differently, better. But when Toussaint's father, Cass, reappears, she is swept off course by his charisma, and the intoxicating power of his radical vision to destroy systems of racial injustice and bring about a bold new way of communal living. Meanwhile, in Alabama, Dutchess struggles to keep Bonaparte, once a beacon of Black freedom and self-determination, in the hands of its last five Black residents--families whose lives have been rooted in this stretch of land for generations--and away from rapidly encroaching white developers. She fights against the erasure of Bonaparte's venerable history and the loss of the land itself, which she has so arduously preserved as Ava's inheritance. As Ava becomes more enmeshed with Cass, Toussaint senses the danger simmering all around him--his well-intentioned but erratic mother; the intense, volatile figure of his father who drives his fledgling Philadelphia community toward ever increasing violence and instability. He begins to dream of Dutchess and Bonaparte, his home and birthright, if only he can find his way there. Brilliant, explosive, vitally important new work from one of America's most fiercely talented storytellers.

So after being a member since 2017, I‘m leaving #botm. 🥺 I‘m using my library more, and it‘s rare that they don‘t have the choices I want. I‘m tired of balancing two book club subscriptions, and #aardvark‘s choices have been more up my alley. Using my last box to pick up two summer books I want to reread, and Betty, which my library doesn‘t have. Strangely enough, I‘m next in line at the library for Unsettled. 😂 #ByeByeBlueBox

TheBookHippie I‘m doing the same trying to use up my credits!! 14mo
Megabooks @TheBookHippie yes, I‘m just ready. I‘d been skipping, but it‘s a pain to have to remember to log in by the 5th to do it. I put my account on hold for a few months too. 14mo
TheBookHippie @Megabooks I feel exactly the same way. I‘ve been skipping so many times. 14mo

JamieArc I‘ve skipped quite a bit this year as well, but I pay monthly, so it‘s worth it to keep my account for those months I am excited about. 14mo
Megabooks @JamieArc yes, I had spent this year doing the same, but I‘ve ended up with a few picks that I‘m not enthused about to get the add on I want. I‘d probably keep at it if @AardvarkBookClub hadn‘t come along, but after having both for a year, it makes sense for me to drop BOTM. I‘m sure there will be a month or two I regret it!! 😂😂🤷🏻‍♀️ 14mo
Hooked_on_books Some months I am so tempted to dive back into botm, but others I‘m glad I‘m not a member anymore. Especially with the ridiculous shipping they have to my spot. And I have exactly the same experience with my library having most of their options. 14mo
Cinfhen I think we‘ve all been down this road before but now there‘s a great alternative with Aardvark 14mo
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books yes! I remember you did for hello beautiful and were disappointed. Their shipping is frustrating. Idk. I hope I don‘t regret it, but I‘m having such a good experience with aardvark, it doesn‘t make sense for me to keep both. 14mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, I left for 6 months in 2018. When I was talking with @Reviewsbylola over on Insta, we were both nostalgic for when BOTM had great under the radar picks. I feel like that happens less often now. 🤷🏻‍♀️ hopefully I don‘t regret it! 14mo
Cinfhen You can always rejoin for $4.99 😂😂 14mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m thinking of doing the same! You can find the botm for sale in several groups on Facebook for reasonable prices! 14mo

Mehso-so

I had high expectations for this book but it just didn‘t gel for me. Ava Carson & her young son are looking to start over but the world isn‘t kind to black women and the system set up to help is often cruel and crooked. Not an easy read 💔 #ARC #NetGalley

Megabooks I‘m hoping I like this more since it‘s my last BOTM choice. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 14mo
Cinfhen I hope you like it @Megabooks 🙏🏼 14mo
