“Joyful Noise“ offers readers a fun, interactive way to learn about nature and teamwork. The poems highlight how creatures big and small play a role in the environment, making it perfect for discussions about cooperation and appreciation of life.
This Newbery Medal-winning collection features poems meant to be read by two voices, creating a rhythmic back-and-forth experience. Each poem brings a different insect to life, celebrating their unique worlds.
"I am the grasshopper, / my wings buzz like a horn, / and my music, so light / is the song of the morn."
This book is perfect for pair work or small group performances. It helps students practice reading fluency, rhythm, and expression, and is ideal for exploring the concept of voice in poetry.
"Joyful Noise" features poems written for two readers to perform together, each capturing the voices of different insects. The verses are lively and rhythmic, and the poems celebrate the unique characteristics of the insect world in an energetic and fun way.
Paul Fleischman's 'Joyful Noise' is a unique collection that brings poetry to life through the voices of insects. With its dual-voice format, it provides an interactive and engaging experience, making it an innovative tool for exploring rhythm and performance in the classroom. This book encourages collaborative learning, enhances oral reading skills, and introduces students to the concept of voice in poetry.
Best read aloud with two people so you can really get the feel that the poems are going for.
Poetry. I really enjoyed the rhythm and rhyme that these pieces of poetry used. It read almost like you were hearing the animals themselves within the words of the poem.
This would be good practice for fluency! Since each poem requires two people to read it would be easy to group students according to how fluent they can read. Put a fluent reader with a student who needs more support with fluency.
What a fun poetry book! This poetry book has 14 poems all about insects and what is fun about these poems is they are meant to be read by two people. The pages are divided so one person reads one side and the other person read the other side.
This would be a fun, creative way to check students reading comprehension and fluency.
These are shorter poems for partners! I feel like a lot of them are about bugs and critters.
This poetry book written by Paul Fleischman and illustrated by Eric Beddows is designed for two voices so it would be perfect for PR in the classroom. This poetry book has also won a John Newbery Medal for its excellence and you can clearly see why. The UDL principle I selected was 5.3- Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance- Which I think reading with different partners would be good practice.
A poem for two voices? You heard that right. “Joyful Noise” By Paul Fleischman is an incredible Newbery award winning P book that should be in everyone‘s classroom library! What makes this book so unique is that it has 14 poems that sit side by side but students read them at the same time, making these poems so fun to hear! The poems are about different insects and their descriptions. Could even be included in a science lesson! #ucflae3414su20
I fell in love with this poetry book, which involves partner reading for most of the book. This would be perfect for ESOL students, particularly strategy 32: Use student pairs for team learning. UDL strategy 7.3. I would use this book for a partner read. https://betterlesson.com/lesson/604086/joyful-noise-poetry-for-two-voices This lesson plan is perfect for partners!
Joyful Noise by Paul Fleischman is a book of poems that is great for a partner read. Each poem is about a different type of bug and has two sides to the poem. The left side is meant to be by reader 1 and the right side is meant to be read by reader 2. A UDL strategy I would use is Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships.
This P, Newberry Honor book has a total of 14 children poems and are written about insects. This book is very unique because it is made to be read by two people. Some lines in the poems are even read together. I loved the illustrations of each insect that the poem was about. Great addition to any classroom!
This book would best be read with PR or RT

This P Newbery winner is a collection of 14 children's poems about insects such as mayflies, lice, and honeybees. The concept is unusual in that the poems are intended to be read aloud by two people. As such, this could be used as CR within the classroom. UDL 5.3 is an obvious choice when it comes to CR since it builds upon fluency. ESOL 14, 16, and 34 would all tie in nicely together when using this strategy.
Poetry. I loved this and I think it would be great for a classroom. The choral reading would be so fun to have the children reading in groups or pairs and sharing the rhythm and a song of poetry.
Joyful Noise by Paul Fleischman and illustrated by Eric Beddows, 1988. This is a wonderful book of poetry designed for coral reading. With two voices, every poem in this book will sound like a song. Using bugs as the topic of each poem is a wonderful choice considering we spend much of our time outside listening to their own choral music and poetry.
Fun to read aloud poetry about the insect world for kids. Great for presentations to adults.
Definitely needs two voices to get the feel of it. #NewberyChallenge
The last of my Newbery hardcover collection and another that remains unread (#LitsyAtoZ here I come!). I know that sticker is atrocious but I don't remove it for the nostalgia factor. I worked at Book Warehouse for two years, met my husband there, and was mentored by the owner when I decided to open my own bookshop. Book Warehouse was open for 30 years and an institution in BR; I was so sad when the owner decided to retire in 2005. #mcpl #mctbr
#happydance when B&N sends you a $10 gift card. It‘s probably because I spend all my monies there 😬
Joyful Noise is a collection of intriguing poems by Paul Fleischman that celebrates the insect world that can be fully appreciated by an individual reader, but can be even more impactful when read aloud by two voices, making this an ideal pick for RT. This book is not only a fascinating guide to the insect world but an triumphant celebration of life. #ucflae3414f17

Longest book - I think it would have to be a Dickens (literally and figuratively). I loved Nicholas Nickleby and Our Mutual Friend - I read them a couple of times! I can't imagine picking them up now.
Short - see last sentence above. To quote Calvin and Hobbes "6 minutes to microwave this?! Who has that kind of time?!"
