Random pick from Libby, which turned out to be interesting. Having grown up in Florida, I found the insights into alligator poaching, the people who participate in it, and how law enforcement tries to stop it. The narrator was good, too.

This book details an undercover operation in Florida to expose alligator poachers. That part is engrossing and great narrative nonfiction. Unfortunately, the author also chooses to inject her own meanderings around Glades in a way that isn‘t fleshed out or focused and feels like filler, so a bit of a mixed bag.

Jeff Babauta goes undercover into a ring of alligator poachers. His fascinating story is about nature and humanity and what it takes to truly protect the environment. It was an interesting look into the world of alligator farming and poaching.

I thought the audiobook really brought the story to life.

When the author heard about an undercover operation that had busted a ring of alligator poachers, she felt compelled to learn more; a Florida native, she was tired of outsiders flying in to write about wacky locals when there was often more to the story. The result is a nuanced portrait of a unique and fragile ecosystem, the people who live in it, love it, seek to profit from it or protect it.

I try hard to live with curiosity and compassion and it‘s rare to read a true crime book so full of both. I hope this book brings more attention to conservation efforts in the Florida Everglades in a way that effects positive change for the residents (human, plant, and animal) there.
