Jane and His Lordship's Legacy | Stephanie Barron
8 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
It's with a heavy heart that Jane Austen takes up a new residence at Chawton Cottage in Hampshire. Secretly mourning the lost love of her life, she's stunned to learn that the late Lord Harold Trowbridge has made her heir to an extraordinary bequest: a Bengal chest filled with his diaries, letters, and most intimate correspondence. From these, Jane is expected to write a memoir of the Gentleman Rogue for posterity. But before she can put pen to paper on this labor of love, she discovers a corpse in the cellar of her new home. The dead man was a common laborer, and a subsequent coroner's examination shows he was murdered elsewhere and transported to Chawton Cottage. Suddenly Jane and her family are thrust into the center of a brewing scandal in this provincial village that doesn't take kindly to outsiders in generaland to Austens in particular. And just as Jane glimpses a connection between the murder and the shattering truth concealed somewhere in Lord Harold's papers, violent death strikes yet another unsuspecting vicitim. Suddenly there are suspects and motives everywhere Jane lookslocal burglaries, thwarted passions, would-be knights, and members of the royal family itself who want Lord Harold hushed . . . even in death. As the tale of one man's illustrious life unfoldsa life that runs a parallel course to the history of two continentsJane races against time to catch a cunning killer before more innocent lives are taken. But her determination to protect Lord Harold's legacy could exact the costliest price of all: her own life.Jane and His Lordship's Legacy is historical suspense writing at its very finest, graced with insight, perception, and uncommon intelligence of its singular heroine in a mystery that will test the mettle of her mind and heart. From the Hardcover edition.

Mehso-so

This one didn‘t do it for me. It took a long while for the role of the letters to become apparent and so for a long time, the book felt like the focus was split. In the end, it was well-plotted, like the others but not one I‘d pick up again

*Stand out moment:When the Lordship‘s Bengal Chest arrives at the Austen‘s rented cottage

*favorite character: Lord Harold-I am still mourning his death with Jane!

*Quote: Promise me…you will write…
What is writing compared to life, my lird?
All we have…Jane. ( His Lordship‘s dying words)

*My task: in Jane‘s home would be to plant, tend, nurture a beautiful perennial & herb garden

kspenmoll 🔼I would rather have a trusted friend spill tea all over. What I learned: intricate details of daily village life & relationships. Thoughts? I just want more of Jane‘s life & mystery solving (edited) 2y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll oh yes. Also I‘m liking these reads and it‘s so far out of my normal genre to read. They have definitely improved as we read a long. I want more of Janes life ! 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I love having more time with Lord Harold! Even knowing it was coming in last book, it was so fast. Needed this book to say goodbye. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Definitely spill the tea! As my friend Claire said on Instagram, it's not like they can @ you when you are dead! 2y

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ We've made it to Chawton!
2️⃣ Lord Harold for one last time.
3️⃣ "Do not cry for me, Jane— but carry me always in your heart, as one who loved you for that courage to be yourself, and not what convention would have you be. Your Rogue"
4️⃣ I spend so much of the gardening season up earlier to beat the heat, it would be lovely to garden in cooler climate. Have leisurely breakfast then head out to the garden.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Spill the tea! I could say all the things I was too polite to say in real life.
6️⃣ "She was clothed this morning in a light muslin gown of pale jonquil colour, with beribboned sandals on her feet,"
I didn't know sandals were a thing in Regency times. Did a bit of Googling, apparently they were considered scandalous.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ How was Jane able to bequest the letters Lord Harold sent to people? Did he make copies of all his correspondence? Is that how she was able to give to The British Museum? 🎩

"I CAME INTO MY KINGDOM TODAY AT HALF- PAST TWO— OR SO much of one as shall ever be granted me on this earth. Four square brick walls, half a dozen chimneys, a simple doorway fronting on the London to Gosport road, and a clutch of outbuildings behind: such is our cottage in Chawton."

We've finally made it to Chawton.
Discussion Post will be up on March 30th.

I loved this one because I could see Chawton come to life! ?
