The Haters
The Haters | Jesse Andrews
From Jesse Andrews, author of the New York Times bestselling Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and screenwriter of the Sundance awardwinning motion picture of the same name, comes a groundbreaking young adult novel about music, love, friendship, and freedom as three young musicians follow a quest to escape the law long enough to play the amazing show they hope (but also doubt) they have in them. Inspired by the years he spent playing bass in a band himself, The Haters is Jesse Andrewss road trip adventure about a trio of jazz-camp escapees who, against every realistic expectation, become a band. For Wes and his best friend, Corey, jazz camp turns out to be lame. Its pretty much all dudes talking in Jazz Voice. But then they jam with Ash, a charismatic girl with an unusual sound, and the three just click. Its three and a half hours of pure musical magic, and Ash makes a decision: They need to hit the road. Because the road, not summer camp, is where bands get good. Before Wes and Corey know it, theyre in Ashs SUV heading south, and The Haters Summer of Hate Tour has begun. In his second novel, Andrews again brings his brilliant and distinctive voice to YA, in the perfect book for music lovers, fans of The Commitments and High Fidelity, or anyone who has ever lovedand hateda song or a band. This witty, funny coming-of-age novel is contemporary fiction at its best.

Mehso-so

This is the second teenagers-take-the-road book I‘ve read in a week. Although I loved the last one, this one is barely a so-so. There were just too many imagined teenage ‘dick‘ disasters for this new grandma to endure. I would have bailed but for finding the audio available via the library with Michael Crouch narrating and I enjoy the voice he gives an MC.

Book 2 of 2019
I am in shock from how much I enjoyed this read. It was hilarious, touching and smartly paced. I loved the characters, especially Wes. I think that he is one of the best characters I have ever read about. Overall I think this was a great book full of humour, passion and great character moment.

Book number 56 of my year. Definitely gonna enjoy this little story.

Caffeinated_Reader @BookHoarder32 it‘s definitely a great little brain vacation from all the murder mystery thrillers I usually read. So far I love it! 6y
Caffeinated_Reader Awe i hope there‘s a part two to this, probably not but that would be fun. I‘m super glad I read it and added it to my 2018 books read. 6y

I loved Me and Earl and The Dying Girl. Hoping this one lives up to expectations 🤞🏽

Peddler410 I hated Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. But that‘s okay! I still like you. 7y
Yournewfriendsams Oh no! Why did you dislike it so much? @Peddler410 7y
Peddler410 @Yournewfriendsams After talking with many people, the only reason I can give is that I am not living in the world of high school. I did read the whole book think “There has to be a redeeming something” only to get to the end, throw the book across the room, and wish there was a way to get those hours back. 😂 My friends who work in HS loved it and said it was on point. My MS teacher friends who read it did not like it at all. (edited) 7y

The Haters is alright... that is because I read author Jesse Andrews' previous teen drama comedy, "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl". The Haters was written well, it was charming, and for a newcomer to Andrews it might even be fantastic. But to me, it was just derivative, repeating the same beats and strokes as Me and Earl. Not bad, just derivative.

This book included lots of dick jokes and descriptive awkward first time sexual encounters. I read a lot of YA but often with female protagonists. I can't think of many descriptive sex scenes. I'm wondering if this was written for a male audience. This is neither good nor bad, it's just got me thinking.

Brutally ugly and honest in the most perfect of ways. Shows the world as it is: a whole lot of unpredictable awesome with a little bit of ugly on the side. Lots of profanity, so not for the faint of heart but oh so worth the read.

MrBook Good review and nice pic! 8y
Letmetakeashelfie Super belated response. Sorry! But thanks so much!!! I still think about this book all these months later. It basically wrote itself. 7y

Getting ready to start Haters. I really liked Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl, and I'm hoping this will appeal to the boys in my classes.

Three teens ditch jazz camp to become road band. What could possibly go wrong? Great characters, good humor, a love interest, & *music*! Fun, fast read. plus terrific audiobook. Narrator Michael Crouch found his inner teen for the guys & renders a good female voice too. Recommended in any medium.
