pickLila Garritty from Friday Night Lights lived a much nicer life than Minka. Her mother was omnipresent and nonexistent at the same time. Knowing she‘s a Cancer and shares my birthdate offered a deeper emotional feeling for me. Compassionate, people pleaser, ease in abandoning self as she does, it all felt very familiar to me. A true survivor. I‘m glad she wrote of her life so we could appreciate what she‘s gone through.
pick5 stars! This memoir was so good & very well written! I only read an article in People magazine months ago that recommended it & I‘m so glad I picked it up! Minka truly had a horrible upbringing with her Mom who worked as a stripper & them never having a roof over their heads that was theirs. It took hard work & determination & a few lucky breaks but Minka was able to break the cycle and find success. I highly recommend this one!

If you liked “Crying in H Mart” and “I‘m Glad My Mom Died”, I think you‘ll also love Minka Kelly‘s gorgeous and unexpected memoir detailing her complicated relationship with her mom. Full of pain and love, her story is brimming with compassion and complexity. Her narration was gripping and hearing her emotion brought me to tears a couple of times. Stunning in every way!🦩🎧
pickI know Minka Kelly from her stint as Dove on the show Titans but I have the utmost respect for her, no matter she she finds herself! Growing up with a stripper mom, being bounced around from house to house, being financially insecure and witnessing domestic abuse to becoming a nurse and subsequently an actress! What a roller coaster of a life and she's come out on the other side!!!
pickIf you think Minka Kelly grew up privileged like her Friday Night Lights‘ character Lyla, this book will change your mind. She writes about a challenging childhood with her single mom who often left her with friends. She grew up tough, moved a lot, and had to fight and take care of herself from a young age. There‘s not much about her Hollywood work b/c it‘s more about how she came to terms with her mom. I have a lot of respect for her honesty.
pickMinka's story is layered and surprising; but mostly because of what we assume of other people. This heartbreaking and authentic memoir is an offering of grace. An articulate, searingly empathic, intelligent demonstration of the work we can do to take the hand of our inner-children and guide them lovingly to a calmer, more centered way of being. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🎧 highly recommend on audio.
pickWowsers. Intense memoir that‘s mostly about Kelly‘s traumatic childhood/younger years. Her reality certainly differs greatly from the assumptions I‘d made about her! She seems very sincere and was super open and analytical about her issues and how they relate to her upbringing, even as it‘s clear she‘s still processing and working through things (with lots of personal and professional support). Her audio narration was lovely and emotional.
