This was exactly the dark book I needed. Content warning for rape on page. It‘s an age-old story of women going against a powerful man, but Gilmartin updated and told it well.
One of Ireland‘s best chefs has been accused of rape by several employees. He‘s on trial for one. He, his wife, and a former employee reluctant to come forward with her own story narrate. Having all these perspectives really got to the heart of the story.
Although this is fiction, it reads like an actual account. Set in Dublin, this shows that sexual assault is universal. Flawed characters, and a blurring of the truth. Told from the point of view of three characters. Well written!
Let me begin by saying that I've read a few books recently by Irish authors and I have loved each one!
'Service' surrounds Daniel Costello, a well known chef, and the accusations of sexual assault/rape against him. The book alternates perspectives between three characters: Hannah, a waitresses, Julie, Dan's wife, and Dan. This melancholic book would make an excellent book club selection.
