Little Girl Lost: A DS Lucy Black Novel 1 | Brian McGilloway
3 posts | 11 read | 8 to read
A breathtaking new crime thriller from the author of the acclaimed Inspector Devlin series.During a winter blizzard, a small girl is found wandering half-naked at the edge of an ancient woodland. Her hands are covered in blood but it is not her own. Unwilling or unable to speak, the only person she seems to trust is the young officer who rescued her, Detective Sergeant Lucy Black.DS Black is baffled to find herself suddenly transferred from a high-profile case involving the kidnapping of another girl, a prominent businessman's teenage daughter, to the newly formed Public Protection Unit. Meanwhile, she has her own problems: caring for her Alzheimer's-stricken father; and avoiding conflict with her surly Assistant Chief Constable who also happens to be her mother. As she struggles to identify the unclaimed child, Lucy begins to realise that this case and the kidnapping may be linked by events from the grimmest days of the country's recent history events that also defined her own girlhood.Little Girl Lost is a devastating crime thriller about corruption, greed and vengeance, and a father's love for his daughter.

Solid police procedural set in Northern Ireland. Contemporary novel, but the influences of The Troubles run through the storyline and background of the characters. Looking forward to reading more by this author.

JaclynW I've never seen this! I'm so curious! 7y
lauralovesbooks1 @JaclynW We were on vacation in Ireland and talking with our teenage waitress at a pub in a small town. I mentioned that I had been reading a lot of books by Irish authors before my trip. She asked if I had read this one -- he was her teacher and she thought he was supposed to be pretty good. That was enough for me to order it when we got back to the states. 7y
JaclynW @lauralovesbooks1 That's awesome! I'm definitely checking it out. I've heard bits about The Troubles but would love to know more. What are your other favorite Irish authors/books? I've read a lot of Irish books/authors too! I used to live in Ireland and have visited twice in the last year. I love it! Where did you go on your recent trip? What were your favorite places? 7y

lauralovesbooks1 @JaclynW Some of my favorites are John Boyne, Sebastian Barry, and Anne Enright. We started in Dublin and ended in Dublin, with a big circle of the country in between -- Newgrange, Tollymore, Giant's Causeway, Galway, Dingle, Killarney, Cork and Cobh, Rock of Casheel, Glendalough, Howth -- and more. It was such a wonderful trip, we can't wait to go back. 7y
lauralovesbooks1 @JaclynW Who are some of your favorite Irish authors? 7y
JaclynW @lauralovesbooks1 Wow! You really got around! That's great! I haven't been to a few on the places you listed. Another trip is needed I guess! 😉😄 We saw Newgrange this last trip. I've been to Glendalough multiple times, it's a favorite (so gorgeous)! Howth is cool! Did you try Leo Burdock's Famous Fish & Chips? Mmmm! We have good friends (Irish) that live in Rush, it's a suburb of Dublin. They take us to all of the best places. ❤ 7y
JaclynW @lauralovesbooks1 I've read a few Irish authors/books, but want to do more! I started with some of the classics - Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, C.S. Lewis and Bram Stoker. I've read contemporary authors like Colm Toibin, Frank McCourt, Maeve Binchy, Donal Ryan, and Maggie O'Farrell. I'm currently reading my first by John Boyne (The Hearts Invisible Furies) and loving it. 7y
JaclynW @lauralovesbooks1 One of my Irish friends is actually related to Sebastian Barry. I was given The Secret Scripture by this friend to read, I haven't done so yet. I'm curious about his newest book too. Which books of his have you read and enjoyed? 7y
JaclynW I will have to checkout Anne Enright. Thanks! 😊 7y
lauralovesbooks1 I loved Heart's Invisible Furies -- and what a memorable opening line! I'll have to check out some of the other authors you recommended. The Secret Scripture was fantastic -- and the main character in that one was a side character in one of his others. 7y
