About to start this book had to pause reading the testing because the death was triggering me with everything that happened... This book I won from Bookishfirst
I like how Zack and Ashes friendship evolved. This is a fast pace and fun book. The characters are fun and relatable. I love the little bit of sarcastic humor thrown in. I think middle grade kids will enjoy this book and even find themselves enjoying the adventure right along with all the characters. I find this to be a wonderful book for even adults looking for a quick fun read. I would definitely recommend this book!
I loved everything about this book! The plot was very immersive, and I frequently lost myself within the story. It was filled with action and also had complex relationships that moved the story along. Zach was a wonderful protagonist. His point of view felt authentic and realistic, especially in relationship to him being gay. Throughout the whole book I felt as though I was on an adventure with Zach and his friends.
This is a fun fantasy novel that, in my opinion, every middle schooler can find something to connect with. Themes such as bullying, sexuality and identity, religion, friendship, and good versus evel are found throughout this novel, as well as being a delightful fantastical tale. The story is quick-paced, which I believe will keep kids hooked and reading. The inclusion of characters and events from mythology and lore was a plus.
