Nova Albright was going to be the first Black homecoming queen at Lovett Highbut now she's dead. Murdered on coronation night. Fans of One of Us Is Lying and The Other Black Girl will love this unputdownable thriller. Nova Albright, the first Black homecoming queen at Lovett High, is dead. Murdered the night of her coronation, her body found the next morning in the old slave cemetery she spent her weekends rehabilitating. Tinsley McArthur was supposed to be queen. Not only is she beautiful, wealthy, and white, its her legacyher grandmother, her mother, and even her sister wore the crown before her. Everyone in Lovett knows Tinsley would do anything to carry on the McArthur tradition. No one is more certain of that than Duchess Simmons, Novas best friend. Duchesss father is the first Black police captain in Lovett. For Duchess, Novas crown was more than just a win for Nova. It was a win for all the Black kids. Now her best friend is dead, and her father wont face the fact that the main suspect is right in front of him. Duchess is convinced that Tinsley killed Novaand that Tinsley is privileged enough to think she can get away with it. But Duchesss father seems to be doing what he always does: fall behind the blue line. Which means that the white girl is going to walk. Duchess is determined to prove Tinsleys guilt. And to do that, shell have to get close to her. But Tinsley has an agenda, too. Everyone loved Nova. And sometimes, love is exactly what gets you killed.

Wow... I do NOT regret spending an audible credit on this one! I'll be thinking about it for a while.

Nova and I are walking in unison, leading the crowd that followed us outta B building to witness for themselves what's about to go down.

The synopsis reminded me slightly of Weight of Blood, however it didn‘t come close. For a book titled “The Black Queen” that deals with systemic racism, white privilege, micro aggressions and the like, it spends way too much time with an unlikable white girl with an undeserved redemption arc. Too much Tinsley, not enough Nova.

I wanted to love this, and it does explore some very interesting and important topics, but the main focus is not on the Black queen, but instead on the white girl trying to clear her name. I do plan on reading the author‘s next book, because the social justice angle appears to maybe be on the level I was hoping this book would be.

It kept me interested, but there were a few problematic issues:

The press can not go after a minor so publicly without facing repercussions.

The characters in this book were either evil or all good. In real life, people who do good things can be racist also.

The MC is a white girl when the book is supposed to be about a murdered Black girl.

My goal was to finish it, and I did. Tomorrow, I will read 100 pgs.

My goal for today was to read 100 pages of this book, and I achieved it right before bed. It was in a spot where I didn't want to put it down, but sleep is not overrated when you are middle-aged. My goal for tomorrow is to finish the book.

This is the fourth book that I‘ve read so far in 2023. I am utilizing an Apple iBook app. I think that the black queen is my favorite book so far of 2023. It was an easy read. Im glad that YA has become more inclusive and eclectic. I Five stars out of 5. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Stayed up late to read 71 pages out of 297. This is a debut novel but in my opinion so far it‘s good.
