Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird
Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird: Stories | Agustina Bazterrica
14 posts | 14 read | 9 to read
A collection of nineteen dark, wildly imaginative short stories from the author of the award-winning TikTok sensation Tender Is the Flesh. From celebrated author Agustina Bazterrica, this collection of nineteen brutal, darkly funny short stories takes into our deepest fears and through our most disturbing fantasies. Through stories about violence, alienation, and dystopia, Bazterricas vision of the human experience emerges in complex, unexpected waysoften unsettling, sometimes thrilling, and always profound. In Roberto, a girl claims to have a rabbit between her legs. A womans neighbor jumps to his death in A Light, Swift, and Monstrous Sound, and in Candy Pink, a woman fails to contend with a difficult breakup in five easy steps. Written in Bazterricas signature clever, vivid style, these stories question love, friendship, family relationships, and unspeakable desires.

Pain & trembling, killers & sieves. Ragged sketches of stories that survive on energy alone. Underdeveloped. Trans. 2023 by Sarah Moses.

91 “People are capable of anything to dissipate the monotony of their lives.”

103 “She had the eyes of a filthy, infertile, solitary cat.”

113 “A circle. This is what Adah wants to be. She‘s not interested in holding abstract ideas in her head. She wants to be a circle.”

This was an interesting book. Like any collection of short stories, some were really good, some were not, a couple were like 🧐🧐🧐. Overall I liked it, though it was very dark.

Weird little short stories by the author of #TenderIstheFlesh, the most gruesome and disgusting book I've ever read (and loved it). There were 4 or 5 good ones, the rest was a bit too abstract for my taste.

Despite the name, a solid collection of 20 short stories perfect for the first #scarathon post!

This also nails the first prompt for #scarathonphotochallenge - Black!

Yuki_Onna I've heard such different opinions about this one & I'm super interested to hear what you think about it! 14mo
Coueriamb @Yuki_Onna Short Story collections are always hard to quantify because some will always stand out over others! I found myself really liking most of them tbh. I‘ve returned my copy to the library so I can‘t remember the title but there was one with a taxi driver that stuck out to me. It reminded me a lot of Shirley Jackson- more eerie than icky 13mo

A collection of short stories, both creepy and thought provoking. The writing is poetic and makes me want to savor the words. 3.5 stars because although the stories are good, nothing is great.

I will admit to not getting many of the stories in this dark collection from the author of Tender Is the Flesh. Some were short and powerful, but most didn‘t grab me like the novel. I‘d say a #BorrowNotBuy

BarbaraBB Did you “like” Tender is the Flesh? 1y
Cinfhen I loved Tender but not sure I‘d like a collection of his short stories 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y

Started this yesterday at Dallas‘ August Silent Bookclub meeting. Totally in love so far. My favorite story is the one about the breakup so far.

I loved Tender is the Flesh and was thus curious about this collection. Some of the stories are fantastic (the second one in particular), but some just didn‘t hold my attention. I don‘t know if that‘s the format (audio) or the stories themselves, some of which are very short. A low pick for me.

BarbaraBB I was very curious too because of Tender is the Flesh but now I won‘t hurry up read this one. I often feel about short stories the way you describe. 1y

This collection of short stories from the author of Tender is the Flesh is just as creepy and disconcerting as that novel. I really enjoyed how many of the stories were in second person but some of the stories did feel disturbing just for disturbing's sake.

Pjwagner I am excited for this one!!! Going to see if I can pick it up after work. 1y
