The Red-Headed Pilgrim
The Red-Headed Pilgrim | Kevin Maloney
6 posts | 6 read | 1 to read
Provocative, poignant, and resoundingly hilarious, The Red-Headed Pilgrim is the tragicomic tale of an anxious red-head and his sordid pursuit of enlightenment and pleasure (not necessarily in that order). On a sunny day in a business park near Portland, Oregon, 42-year-old web developer Kevin Maloney is in the throes of an existential crisis that finds him shoeless in a field of Queen Annes lace, reflecting on the tumultuous events that brought him to this moment. Growing up in the suburbs, young Kevin suffered a psychological break that ripped me from my humdrum existence mainlining high fructose corn syrup and episodes of The Golden Girls. Thus begins a journey of hard-earned insights and sexual awakening that takes Kevin from angst-ridden Beaverton to the beaches of San Diego, a frontier-themed roadside attraction in Helena, Montana, and a hermetic shack on an organic lettuce farm. Everything changes when Kevin falls in love with Wendy. After a chance tarot reading lands them on the frigid coast of Maine, their lives are unsettled by the birth of their daughter, Zo, whose sudden presence is oftentimes terrifying, frequently disturbing, and yetmiraculouslyalways wondrous. The Red-Headed Pilgrim is an irresistible novel of misadventure and new beginnings, of wanderlust and bad decisions, of parenthood and divorce, and of the heartfelt truths we unearth when we least expect it. READ AN EXCERPT: "Hansel & Gretel" excerpted from The Red-Headed Pilgrim, on Fence.

#Roll100 I think the universe is trying to tell me something with #66 showing up two months in a row. Think I will start it tomorrow.

I listened to this one, and I'm glad I did because I might have bailed on it as a book. It's another short read on the #tob24 long list.

I really don't have much to say about this one. Overall, it was just okay for me. I think had I read this in my 20s, I might have connected with it more.

Perhaps I'm too old and jaded now to fully appreciate the wanderlust of this journey. 😁

I neither liked nor disliked this Bildungsroman about a young kid who drops out of college and gets his heart broken by some interesting (weird) women as he drifts around the northern US in his 20s. I felt the sexual humor was sophomoric and prurient, and there wasn‘t much meat (I guess) to the story to attach me to the MC. The stoner philosophizing just isn‘t my thing. Glad I borrowed from #hoopla. I did enjoy the audio narration. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #tob24

Megabooks @Suet624 I know you liked this one. It just didn‘t click with me, but I didn‘t dislike it either. Just wasn‘t my sense of humor. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think if I had those place connections that you do, it might have swung it to low pick. 12mo
Reggie Lol, love the review. 12mo
Jas16 Glad you liked it a little more than I did! 12mo

squirrelbrain This is difficult to get hold of for me, so after yours and @Jas16 review, I won‘t bother. (Unless it makes the shortlist of course! 🙄) 12mo
Megabooks @Reggie thanks! 😂 12mo
Megabooks @Jas16 I did. It wasn‘t my thing, but it wasn‘t bad. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 12mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain you and I are both such completists! 😂😂👯‍♀️ 12mo
Suet624 No need to explain, but thank you. I was very surprised it was a TOB selection, as it surely didn't qualify. And yes, the locale was of interest to me. Being a wandering hippie myself I could completely relate to this guy but I also got a bit tired of him. So I completely understand why others didn't like the book. 12mo

I think trying to cram shorter #tob24 books in before leaving on vacation was a mistake because I am not liking any of them and am starting to feel like a contrarian. Honestly I knew from the start I should have bailed on this one. I found it painful rather than funny but the audiobook was short and I was afraid things would improve and I would miss out.

BarbaraBB I think I‘ll wait a bit 😀 12mo
Megabooks I‘m going to try this just because it‘s on hoopla… 12mo
Jas16 @Megabooks I will be looking for your review. I think this one comes down to a person‘s taste in humor. 12mo
Suet624 I liked this but I was on a road trip and was intrigued by the fact I must have seen the guy in town. It‘s definitely not a TOB book. 12mo
Jas16 @Suet624 Having the local connection must have been fun. I am glad you liked it more than I did. 12mo

There I am, listening to this story while driving from Burlington VT to Maine, and all of a sudden Maloney is describing how he lived in Burlington for years AND Maine! It all felt a bit surreal. I swear I must have seen this guy in Burlington. Anyway, this is a story of his life which had me chuckling thru most of it & a short 4-hour listen. I'm surprised it's on the #TOB24 list but if you're looking for something light, it's worth a listen.

Suet624 A definite pick.

Hooked_on_books I love when that kind of thing happens! 12mo
Ruthiella Sounds good. No doubt you‘ve stood behind him in a check out line at some point in your life. 😂 12mo

Suet624 @Hooked_on_books I kept gasping, “What???“ It was pretty cool. 12mo
Suet624 @Ruthiella He actually worked at the local Coop so I'm pretty sure I must have at least been close to him. 😃 😃 12mo
sarahbarnes I love this story. 12mo
Suet624 @sarahbarnes I still can't believe this book is on the TOB! :) 12mo
BarbaraBB What a great story! And another ToB book! 12mo
Chelsea.Poole This cover 😆 I‘m interested to read it mostly because of the cover. 12mo
Suet624 @Chelsea.Poole after having read it I‘m not sure why that bear is on the cover. … Oh wait, I think I got it! He had a job at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. 😂😂 12mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB 😊😊 12mo
squirrelbrain Sounds great - it‘s one I can‘t get hold of right now though. 12mo
