It's nothing more than a business arrangement, but soon they each realize their feelings aren't entirely platonic. I really enjoyed the complicated romance in this sci fi novel, and Aliette de Bodard's world building in this universe is just fascinating.

The last thing Xich Si exuded when she was captured by a group of pirates was for their infamous leader the mindship, Rice Fish to offer to marry her as a solution to both of their problems. Xich Si finds this new world full of turmoil and a relationship more complex than she expected.
I loved what this story had to say about motherhood and complex relationships. I want to read more of the Xuya Universe now.

I was probably a bit optimistic with all the books I brought with me for my holidays at home but I just couldn't narrow down what I wanted-- especially since I'm not sure if we'll be spending NYE down here or back at my place with my sister @sebrittainclark
