The Red Scholar's Wake
The Red Scholar's Wake: A Xuya Universe Romance | Aliette de Bodard
7 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
When tech scavenger Xch Si is captured and imprisoned by the infamous pirates of the Red Banner, she expects to be tortured or killed. Instead, their leader, Rice Fish, makes Xch Si an utterly incredible proposition: an offer of marriage. Both have their reasons for this arrangement: Xch Si needs protection; Rice Fish, a sentient spaceship, needs a technical expert to investigate the death of her first wife, the Red Scholar. Thats all there is to it. But as the interstellar war against piracy rages on and their own investigation reaches a dire conclusion, the two of them discover that their arrangement has evolved into something much less business-focused and more personal...and tender. And maybe the best thing thats ever happened to either of thembut only if they can find a way to survive together. A rich space opera and an intensely soft romance, from an exceptional SF author. Advance Praise for The Red Scholar's Wake: So romantic I may simply perish. Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine Throne LESBIAN SPACE PIRATES. Enough said. Katee Robert, NYT bestselling author of Neon Gods The Red Scholars Wake is a fizzingly inventive space opera, quite unlike anything Ive encountered before, and told with style, grace, and a big dose of heart. SF is lucky to have Aliette de Bodard. Alastair Reynolds, Sunday Times bestselling author The Red Scholars Wake takes you on an exhilarating dive into space piracy with passion, politics, dazzling settings, and-even better-a profound core of love transcending hopelessness that rings throughout the story. A scavenger captured by pirates is offered marriage to the mindship leading the Red Banner in exchange for finding out who killed her late wife. It's nothing more than a business arrangement, but soon they each realize their feelings aren't entirely platonic. I really enjoyed the complicated romance in this sci fi novel, and Aliette de Bodard's world building in this universe is just fascinating.

Tea_and_Starstuff This has been on my list for awhile! Glad to hear your thoughts. 2y

Also from Monday‘s book mail. This was my December Illumicrate subscription box. I can‘t remember what the delay was …

Ombré sprayed edges with a signed book plate & foil on the hardcover.

Need to add this to my TBR too!

Getting out of bed today was a struggle so I bribed myself with some chai and reading before starting anything else. Surprisingly effective!

Tea_and_Starstuff I'm so curious about this one! Loved the blurb I heard, but sadly not easy for me to get via audio or library e-book, so I may need to bite the bullet and read it some other way. 2y
Branwen I really want to read this! How is it? 2y

5/5

The last thing Xich Si exuded when she was captured by a group of pirates was for their infamous leader the mindship, Rice Fish to offer to marry her as a solution to both of their problems. Xich Si finds this new world full of turmoil and a relationship more complex than she expected.

I loved what this story had to say about motherhood and complex relationships. I want to read more of the Xuya Universe now.

'The Red Scholar is dead'. The words, at first barely a whisper, passed through the fleet, gaining strength as they went - from the largest mindships to the smaller three-plates craft, from the open-the-voids to the planet-hoppers.

I was probably a bit optimistic with all the books I brought with me for my holidays at home but I just couldn't narrow down what I wanted-- especially since I'm not sure if we'll be spending NYE down here or back at my place with my sister @sebrittainclark
