Tangled Vines: Power, Privilege, and the Murdaugh Family Murders
Tangled Vines: Power, Privilege, and the Murdaugh Family Murders | John Glatt
5 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
In Tangled Vines, bestselling true crime author John Glatt reconstructs the rise of the prestigious Murdaugh family and the shocking double murder that led to the downfall of its patriarch, Alex Murdaugh. Among the lush, tree-lined waterways of South Carolina low country, the Murdaugh name means power. A century-old, multimillion-dollar law practice has catapulted the family into incredible wealth and local celebrity--but it was an unimaginable tragedy that would thrust them into the national spotlight. On June 7th, 2021, prominent attorney Alex Murdaugh discovered the bodies of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, on the grounds of their thousand-acre hunting lodge. The mystery deepened only months later when Alex himself was shot in the head and left for dead on the side of the road. But as authorities scrambled for clues and the community reeled from the loss and media attention, dark secrets about this Southern legal dynasty came to light. The Murdaughs, it turned out, were feared as much as they were loved. And they wouldn't hesitate to wield their influence to protect one of their own; two years before he was killed, a highly intoxicated Paul Murdaugh was at the helm of a boat when it crashed and killed a teenage girl, and his light treatment by police led to speculation that privilege had come into play. As bombshells of financial fraud were revealed and more suspicious deaths were linked to the Murdaughs, a new portrait of Alex Murdaugh emerged: a desperate man on the brink of ruin who would do anything, even plan his own death, to save his family's reputation.

squirrelbrain @LeeRHarry -@leahbergen - I bought it too. I wasn‘t sure whether I needed it, having watched the doc, but the assistant said she thought the book was better! 5mo
LeahBergen @squirrelbrain I held off buying it because I thought I‘d heard everything there was to hear about the case. Well, it looks like I‘ll have to buy a copy now, too! 😆 5mo
squirrelbrain @LeahBergen - apparently it goes more into how they made their money, and the lengths they went to in order to keep their place in society. 5mo

Listening to this, which gives a good overview, but I find Glatt‘s writing to be very distant and not super researched. All of this could have been written just watching YouTubers. Also the choice of a British narrator for such a Southern American crime is just bizarre.

Like so many, the convoluted twists of the crimes of the powerful Murdaugh family captured me as they unfolded- as well as with the documentary coverage by major networks, HBO & Netflix. While the book doesn‘t contain any real jaw-dropping revelations after those programs, Glatt conveys the family history well to better encompass the power the family exerted. The financial details are laid out well though the whole truth seems yet to be revealed!

Not as good as I thought it would be. I think the main problem is that it's so fresh and new. It was interesting to see how the Murdaugh Dynasty started. The murder trial hadn't even happened by time Glatt wrote this. Hopefully, the final draft will include the trial.
