A Child's Calendar (20th Anniversary Edition)
A Child's Calendar (20th Anniversary Edition) | John Updike
10 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Newly available in hardcover, this 20th anniversary edition of a Caldecott Honor classic combines the star power of John Updike and Trina Schart Hyman. Celebrate the little moments that make each month special in this beautiful picture book featuring twelve poems about a family and the turn of the seasons. From the short, frozen days of January, through the light of summer, to the first snowflakes of December, Updike's poems rejoices in the familiar, wondrous qualities that make each part of the year unique. Hyman's award-winning paintings--modeled after her own daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren--depict an interracial family going about the business of their lives throughout the year: sledding in January, watching fireworks in July, and playing in the autumn leaves. Bold and colorful, they're filled with the intricate detail for which her art is famous-- including cameo appearances by the artist and her partner, Jean Aull. Featuring a redesigned cover, the 20th Anniversary Edition of this inclusive Caldecott Honor book is a beautiful read-aloud to treasure throughout the year, with family and friends.

An activity for this book could be to have students create their own poems for that month. I think it would be neat to see what everyone would come up with.

I really like this book! I think it would be good to pull this book out each month and read the poem. At the end of the school year, you could read the poems for summer. I think this book was a creative idea!

Where has the year gone?! I can‘t understand how it is December. 😲

This is such a delightful year keeper. We (kids & I) read each month‘s poem throughout and have been for several years. I will no doubt continue on after they have flown the coop and will gift a copy to them & their children if and when that time comes. ♥️

LeahBergen What a lovely tradition. ❤️ 2y

A Child‘s Calendar by John Updike and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman is a Caldecott award-winning poetry book (P). These poems follow a family throughout the year as it includes 12 poems, one for each month of the year. This book would be great as a choral reading activity (CR) as I feel like poems are very song-like.

Nkaufmann They have a rhythm and sometimes a rhyme to them and because of that, I think it would be fun for the students to read chorally. The UDL principle 3.2 regarding highlighting patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships and the EL principle 12 regarding teaching to two objectives, language and content can be met by this book. When discussing poetry, I believe it is important for teachers to talk about the patterns the author utilizes (edited) 4y
Nkaufmann ...from stanza to stanza. In addition, I think while teachers should talk about the content of the poem, they should also point out the language used in poetry as there is usually more figurative language used compared to a regular story.

DrSpalding This is a wonderful poetry anthology that you could use each month, as a new month begins. Your article is a good one! Use poetry consistently with all readers including struggling readers in your classroom. 4y

I can‘t recommend this book enough! I see there are $4 copies on various used book sites. 😊 Here is December‘s painting that accompanies the poem on the opposite page. So cozy! I wish someone would make a hanging or table top version so I could leave it out & appreciate each one all month long.

@ForeverNerdy I thought of you & kids when we read November‘s poem. This book is super charming with a poem and artwork for each month. It was re-illustrated to include more diversity after the artist became a grandparent to grandchildren of color. I leave this book in the kitchen so that I remember to read it with each new month. It will last for years. 😁

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That‘s lovely!! 😍 7y
Tamra @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled the artwork is very charming! And the poetry isn‘t childish, so we can read it for years. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Oh this is neat! I‘m adding to our reads, thinking I‘ll keep up all year too. Most of my kiddos love poetry, my daughter (oldest) struggles with it. I love diversity in books, that we both share a love of. Thank you my friend for thinking of me. Makes me feel good 💜💜 7y
Tamra @ForeverNerdy 😊 The poems are not long, so doesn‘t require long concentration. I have a couple of other kid poetry books that I keep handy because it‘s easy to read a short poem at meals. 7y

This is a beautiful book of monthly illustrated poems. It is all the better because it was re-illustrated to be more racially diverse.
