It's too late for a Sweet Sixteen, but what if Mahalia had a coming-out party? A love letter to romantic comedies, sweet sixteen blowouts, Black joy, and queer pride. Mahalia Harris wants. She wants a big Sweet Sixteen like her best friend, Naomi. She wants the super-cute new girl Siobhan to like her back. She wants a break from worryingabout money, snide remarks from white classmates, pitying looks from church ladies . . . all of it. Then inspiration strikes: Its too late for a Sweet Sixteen, but what if she had a coming-out party? A singing, dancing, rainbow-cake-eating celebration of queerness on her own terms. The idea lights a fire beneath her, and soon Mahalia is scrimping and saving, taking on extra hours at her afterschool job, trying on dresses, and awkwardly flirting with Siobhan, all in preparation for the coming out of her dreams. But its not long before shes buried in a mountain of bills, unfinished schoolwork, and enough drama to make her English lit teacher blush. With all the responsibility on her shoulders, will Mahalias party be over before its even begun? A novel about finding yourself, falling in love, and celebrating what makes you you.

"That's what picking favorite songs is, really. You offer up your heart so that the song can latch onto you."

A great quote for #TuesdayTunes!

I loved this LGBTQIA+ YA romance. The title is based on the song "Friday I'm in Love" by The Cure. The book discusses sexual orientation, race, class, and music. An excellent read for music lovers during Pride Month!

TieDyeDude I saw you posted about this book a few days ago; I love its cover!

Great song, too. Such a light, uplifting pop song, which is something I don't always associate with The Cure 😅. Thanks for sharing.

New Reads November is BACK on my book podcast! YA author Eliot Schrefer joins me to kick off the sixth (!!!!) year of this beloved annual series and to talk about FRIDAY I‘M IN LOVE by Camryn Garrett. We discuss coming out narratives, casual racism, self-aware narrators, the subversion of tropes about sweet sixteens, and how to write for a teen audience. 🎉🏳️‍🌈 Listen at the link in my bio!

Burnout is real, y'all. Not sure how to combat it aside from making the most of every rare day off. Today it means pj's all day and a new YA read, and it feels like bliss. #CurrentlyReading

Yep, just as cute as the cover. There is very much angst in this book (I have a high angst tolerance, and even I was like, this is quite a bit.) Incredibly real in all the ways being a teen makes you feel like adults are both expecting too much and not enough from you. And all the crush feels.
