About halfway done with this snowy and grisly murder mystery. Listening to the audio so I can hear proper pronunciation of the Sámi words.

Elsa, a 9-year-old Sámi girl, is witness to her reindeer‘s murder. The murderer threatens to kill her too if she says anything. The animals continue to be tortured and killed. The Swedish police do nothing. A gripping tale that spans decades in Elsa‘s life, portraying the joys and challenges of contemporary Indigenous life in northern Sweden. #Translation by Rachel Willson Broyles

Loving this so far.
I don‘t think I‘m going to make it. At about 1/4 of the way through, the book isn‘t keeping my interest. It could be a Taylor issue where I‘m the problem, but for now, I‘m taking a break from reindeer murders…✌ï¸
I‘m in an “in between books†rut that is really getting the best of me. The ability to focus and latch onto a book has been missing since I finished my last read. Seriously hoping one of these guys pulls me out of it. BOTM and ALLLLLL the library holds arrived at the same time. Good thing my library is pretty forgiving when it comes to late fees 🤪
"Listen to this: 'I meet two young Sámi women who don't dare be photographed; the hate they will face is too great a threat."" ....
Minna read in silence and laughed out loud.
"Well, he sure can paint a picture. And no surprise, he uses words like 'lawless land' and 'wilderness. Good thing we have both ICA and Coop to buy groceries out here in the wilderness. How else would we survive?"
Dark story about the reality of the Sami reindeer herders in Sweden. 9-year-old Elsa sees a man killing her calf. Local authorities do nothing to stop the killings, and adult Elsa‘s anger will push her toward action of her own. https://cannonballread.com/2023/02/stolen-a-novel-elcicco/
Fantastic read about a young Sami woman and her family. Devastating and heartbreaking. Broke my heart to see another indigenous people be treated so harshly. Very glad I read this!
Great profile of author and thriller novel focused on the indigenous Sami of Sweden, Denmark, Arctic Circle. So intrigued! https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/30/books/stolen-book-sweden-sami.html?action=cli... @Addison_Reads

What a great read! This book is a mash-up of genres, but it all comes together for a propulsive, heartfelt read.
We start when Elsa is nine and she witnesses something horrific. As she gets older she grows tired of the treatment she, and her family face. I loved this coming-of-age thriller that brings the reader into an indigenous culture that I didn't know much about.
Superbly cool! This one is on NG now! A book about the Swedish Saami people. Book of the year 2021 in Sweden.
