Reflections: On the Magic of Writing
Reflections: On the Magic of Writing: On the Magic of Writing | Diana Wynne Jones
This collection of more than twenty-five critical essays, speeches, and biographical pieces chosen by Diana Wynne Jones before her death in 2011 is essential reading for the author's many fans and for students and teachers of the fantasy genre and creative writing in general. The volume includes insightful literary criticism alongside autobiographical anecdotes, revelations about the origins of the author's books, and reflections about the life of an author and the value of writing for young people. Reflections features the author's final interview, a foreword by award-winning author Neil Gaiman, and an introduction by Charlie Butler, a senior lecturer in English at the University of West England in Bristol.

Confession: it‘s not until I posted that last picture of the library book I‘ve been working on all week, that I noticed how familiar its UK cover looked in other Littens‘ photos. Because, as it turns out, I already owned a copy of this book. 🤦‍♀️

Now I‘m just hoping I still have the drive to finish it without a library due date breathing down my neck...

Centique 😂😂 I know the feeling. I have made a list on my phone of all the unread books I own because I found myself blithely buying more editions of the same thing at second hand book shops! 5y
ravenlee I always visit the same used book shop when I visit my in-laws. One year I bought The Pickwick Papers, because I thought it was time to read it. Got hone from the trip a few days later and put the book on the shelf...next to the identical copy I had bought a year or two prior...from the same store...same edition and everything. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least my thinking is consistent. 5y
Reggie I bought the Milkman on kindle because there was a sale. And then 2 weeks later I cleaned out my car only to realize I had bought it at B&Ns like a month earlier. Lol, it happens. 5y
emtobiasz @Centique @ravenlee @Reggie you all are making me feel better! At least my duplicate was a library book! 5y

I‘ve been working my way through Reflections a few essays at a time this week, revelling in DWJ‘s writing about her writing. Imagine my delight, then, when I found The Ogre Downstairs in a Little Free Library on our walk this morning! #bookserendipity #lfl #tbr #thanksuniverse

Libraries are awesome. So is this book. If you are a writer, give this one a read. Jones left a legacy in the books she wrote and some of her processes are detailed in the essays in this volume. I'm a little over a third in and cannot recommend it enough.

Pickpick

Reflections, by Diana Wynne Jones, should definitely be added to your to-read list if you're a fan of her novels; the book talks a lot about what inspired them, and includes stories for Jones' childhood. It also has some great tips for writers of all categories and genres. #WhatToRead #NonFiction #Writers

This gem arrived in today's mail! I found Neil Gaiman's introduction to this book, which is included in his audio book The View from the Cheap Seats, so compelling that I ordered this book immediately! Looking forward to digging in!

catsuit_mango I just added it to my stack for exactly the same reason 8y
Louise @catsuit_mango Wow! I wonder if NG knows how powerful his reading of that intro is! He bringing a whole new audience to this book! 🤓✨ 8y
Louise Yikes! I meant "he's", but spell check was having none of it! ? 8y

Diana Wynne Jones knows stuff, y'all.

BkClubCare Yep. ('Course I know that cuz Jenny speaks truth.) Are the Gin and Whiskey girls on Litsy? 8y
xicanti @BkClubCare I haven't seen 'em around, but I'm such a dabbler myself that I might have missed them. 8y
