From New York Times bestselling author Owen King comes a Dickensian fantasy of illusion and charm where cats are revered as religious figures, thieves are noble, scholars are revolutionaries, and conjurers are the most wonderful criminals you can imagine. It begins in an unnamed city nicknamed the Fairest, it is distinguished by many things from the river fair to the mountains that split the municipality in half; its theaters and many museums; the Morgue Ship; and, like all cities, but maybe especially so, by its essential unmappability. Dora, a former domestic servant at the university has a secret desireto find where her brother went after he died, believing that the answer lies within The Museum of Psykical Research, where he worked when Dora was a child. With the city amidst a revolutionary upheaval, where citizens like Robert Barnes, her lover and a student radical, are now in positions of authority, Dora contrives to gain the curatorship of the half-forgotten museum only to find it all but burnt to the ground, with the neighboring museums oddly untouched. Robert offers her one of these, The National Museum of the Worker. However, neither this museum, nor the street it is hidden away on, nor Dora herself, are what they at first appear to be. Set against the backdrop of a nation on the verge of collapse, Doras search for the truth behind the mystery shes long concealed will unravel a monstrous conspiracy and bring her to the edge of worlds. Praise for Owen King: King writes with witty verve. Entertainment Weekly [Owen King] has a captivating energy, a precision and a fondness for people that are rareKing loves people as well as words. Ok! Went to DC last week for OA at the Sup Ct (so cool), & had a nighttime stroll past the white house w sis ☺️ (yes, I was exhausted🥱)

Also spotted Ikigai on living long & happy life… 🤔 curious how it contrasts w hygge…

And picked up a few books at Page 1. I was thinking of reading birthday murder for #seasonalcozies, but I think I‘m done w Meier after this month‘s (Patty‘s day), which I‘m struggling to finish. 🍀👎🏽

Anyone read the tagged?

Ruthiella Wow, you totally look like sisters! Great photo. 🤩 8mo
TieDyeDude Sounds like an interesting trip! 8mo
julieclair What a special trip! So glad you had fun. I hear you on Leslie Meier. I usually enjoy her books, but don‘t want to read her two months in a row. 8mo

This was an unusual book for me. A cozy political fantasy? I enjoyed it! D was a great character. I‘d read more from this world.

After a revolution overturns the ruling elite, D seeks out a mysterious building where her late brother claimed he was helping to save the world, only to find its smoldering ruins. She takes over a museum of wax figures celebrating workers, where terrible sounds wake her in the night. A gruesomely Dickensian story of murder and revenge, with a resourceful and cool-headed heroine, charming young thieves, and a remarkable cast of worship-worthy cats

paper.reveries Wish I'd enjoyed this because your synopsis sounds much better than what I managed to pull out of it! :( 2y
Decalino It was an odd one! I enjoyed it, but I can definitely see where it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. 1y

"The city--nicknamed 'The Fairest' by poets and municipal advocates for its river, the mighty Fair--jutted from the body of the country like a hangnail from its thumb."

I really loved Sleeping Beauties so I have been super excited for this release! Unfortunately, I read some Goodreads reviews that have rated it pretty poorly. In general it has a fairly low overall rating on Goodreads. 😢 I felt tainted by that for a minute, but you know what? Screw it! I'm going to read it anyway! I'm still excited about this book and I'm going in with an open mind! 💕📚💕

TrishB I just got today too, going to read anyway! (When I get to it!) 2y
vivastory I was also bummed out by the mixed reviews but have decided to make up my mind. Sleeping Beauties is a favorite 2y

Owen King‘s new book The Curator comes out Tuesday and you should add it to your TBR right now. I loved it so much. If you love cats, you will too. The world he created in this story is so much fun, you won‘t want to leave it.

A fantasy book where cats are worshipped seemed like something I would love. The world was interesting and I liked the use of magic/illusion in the storytelling. The biggest problem for me though involved the never-ending cast list of characters with names and nicknames and titles and just overall confusion. I couldn't keep any of them straight which made reading this frustrating.

vivastory That's disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to this. Sleeping Beauties was fantastic. 2y
Addison_Reads @vivastory I loved Sleeping Beauties as well, and maybe this was just a case of my brain being overloaded and not connecting with this story. I'll be curious to see what you think if you read it. 2y
