Peg and Rose Solve a Murder
Peg and Rose Solve a Murder: A Charming and Humorous Cozy Mystery | Laurien Berenson
10 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Murder, She Wrote meets The Golden Girls in the award-winning authors brand-new series! Two cantankerous septuagenarians, opposites in every way, put aside their differences to stop a killer if they dont throttle each other first! Rose Donovan looks for the good in everyone. With her sister-in-law, Peg, that sometimes requires a lot of searching. Even a sixty-something former nun like Rose has her limits, and gruff Peg Turnbull sure knows how to push them. But after forty years of bickering, theyre attempting to start over, partnering up to join the local bridge club. Peg and Rose barely have a chance to celebrate their first win before one of the clubs most accomplished players is killed in his home. As the newest members, the sisters-in-law come under scrutiny and decide to start some digging of their own. Bridge is typically seen as a wholesome pastime, yet this group of senior citizens harbors a wealth of vices, including gambling, cheating, and adultery . . . By comparison, Peg and Roses fractious relationship is starting to feel almost functional. But as their suspect list narrows, theyre unaware that their logic has a dangerous flaw. And theyll have to hope that their teamwork holds steady when theyre confronted by a killer whos through with playing games . . . Engaging[Peg and Rose] stand on their own as capable, witty women who are more than up to the task of crime-solving. Bookpage

I should‘ve known a 50% rating on here would mean this would be (best case scenario) a ‘soft pick‘. Maybe it would be if I could finish it, but after 100 pages in and still no murder, I lost interest 🙄🥱😴 Onto the next read 🚀

Aims42 @dabbe 🤣🤣🤣 My thoughts EXACTLY!! With cozy mysteries, I‘m not here for a ton of character building. Give me a few quirky characters, a murder (or two within the first half of the book) and some witty banter and I‘m set 👍 6mo

dabbe @Aims42 Yes! I especially love to read these around the holidays, preferably with the setting in England. Do you have any favorite cozy mysteries? 6mo
Aims42 @dabbe I don‘t know the exact definition of “cozy mysteries” but I‘m always looking for ones similar to The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. I‘d love to know any of your favorites too 6mo
dabbe @Aims42 Can you believe that one is STILL sitting on my shelf? 😱 To me, the quintessential cozy mystery series is the canon of Sherlock Holmes. I adore Agatha Christie as well and have just dabbled with a few Inspector Gamache stories as well as the Jane Austen mysteries. 🤩 6mo
Aims42 @dabbe Oooo I‘ve only read a few Agatha Christie‘s (Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express and I know there‘s one more but I can‘t remember lol), she‘s great too!! I haven‘t dived into her Miss Marple books but I enjoy Pierrot‘s sassiness lol 😆 6mo
dabbe @Aims42 Same here! I've not read a Marple book but love Hercule Poirot. I think AND THEN THERE WERE NONE is my favorite of hers; my freshmen loved it when I taught it back in the day! 🤩 6mo
Aims42 @dabbe It‘s such a good book, from beginning to end! My friend and I are finally getting another friend to read it for the first time. We‘ve asked her to keep us updated along the way lol 😆 It‘s one of those books I wish I could read for the first time again 6mo
dabbe @Aims42 It's probably one of the best page-turners I have ever read. And it would be awesome to read it again for the 1st time. Agree 💯. 6mo
Aims42 @dabbe And I agree with you on it being one of the best page-turners! Wish I would‘ve been able to read it as a freshmen instead of Beowulf 😆 (apologies if that‘s a favorite of yours to read and/or teach, I slogged my way through it lol) 6mo
dabbe @Aims42 It's not so bad if you have the right translation. The translation is everything! 🤩😂🤗 6mo
Aims42 @dabbe That makes sense 😆 6mo

When your coffee cup matches your current read (or when your current read matches your coffee cup 😂). Be safe out there and stay caffeinated, friends ☕️📚

Tamra Love it - so summery! 6mo
Aims42 @Tamra Thank you 😎🌴 I can‘t give up making a cup of hot coffee first thing in the morning even though it‘s very hot & muggy outside lol 6mo

Mehso-so

This was my #bookspin for February and I slogged through it. Partly I had a lot going on, and partly I just want invested in the story. I didn't care about dog shows or bridge so 🤷🏻‍♀️. Also, I figured out the murderer and twist about 3/4 the way through so the big reveal was ho hum for me. This is a spin-off from the author's other mystery series, which was referenced several times. Hopefully she's better at plot in her other books.

Hooked_on_books Well that‘s too bad. Cute cover, though. 10mo
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 10mo

Laurian Berernson is the author of nearly 30 Melanie Travis cozy mysteries. Peg is Melanie's aunt and Peg and Rose Solve a Murder is the 1st in the spinoff series Senior Sleuth Mysteries. Peg and Rose are sister in laws and are much like the "odd couple". But when one of their bridge club members is murdered, the two set their differences aside and team up for an entertaining round of senior sleuthing. A fun and easy reading cozy mystery ??

This is a spin off from a long running series. Maybe if I had read the series, I‘d find some redeeming quality in this book. Alas, I did not. I couldn‘t make myself care what happened. I hate giving books bad reviews, especially since I was given this as an ARC by the publisher, but it was dull.

Peg and Rose Solve A Murder was a darling little read and has set this series off to a fine start.

Finally we‘re looking into the suspects! It feels like it‘s taken a while to get here, but it may be that I‘ve had a lot going on. #PegAndRoseSolveAMurder

I‘m on my lunch break and trying to get a few chapters in. Let me set the scene: the murder from the title has occurred. The protagonists are sitting at a table chatting about the murder. One of the protagonists offers the other cake. They‘ve had a shock. The second refuses because cake is sinful. I am firmly on Team Peg. Rose is insufferable. #PegAndRoseSolveAMurder

I won an ARC! (That‘s really the only thing I ever win, but not complaining!) So far, it‘s a cute book. Peg and Rose are septuagenarian SILs. Peg is a little prickly, but funny. Rose is a bit holier-than-thou, but she‘s starting to loosen up. I‘ll let you know how it goes. #PegAndRoseSolveAMurder

Lreads Sounds like a fun story. 2y
MissHel It‘s cute! There‘s a lot of jargon about dog shows and bridge that I don‘t understand, but it‘s an interesting story. 2y
