People Could Fly: The Picture Book
People Could Fly: The Picture Book | Virginia Hamilton
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Virginia Hamilton's Coretta Scott King Honor book is the breathtaking fantasy tale of slaves who possessed ancient magic that enabled them to fly away to freedom. And it is a moving tale of those who did not have the opportunity to fly away, who remained slaves with only their imaginations to set them free as they told and retold this tale. Leo and Diane Dillon's powerful illustrations accompany Hamilton's voice as it sings out from the pages with the soaring cadences that echo the story tellers of her childhood as the granddaughter of a fugitive slave. Awards for "The People Could Fly" collection: A Coretta Scott King Award A "Booklist" Children s Editors Choice A "School Library Journal" Best Books of the Year A "Horn Book" Fanfare An ALA Notable Book An NCTE Teachers Choice A "New York Times" Best Illustrated Children s Books of the Year"

This book is historical fiction. It follows the abuse of the main characters under slavery. However, these people also have the magical ability to fly. The book follows the violent treatment of the enslaved people and them slowly being able to regain their ability to fly that was taken away. It is a story of the human spirit and triumph.

This was a very emotional book that is an amazing book to read to older kids during history lessons about slavery.

Currently working on a project to put the Corretta Scot King Awards in their own section of the library. These books definitely need to be recognized and I think many students and teachers will benefit from them 💙 I remember watching the Wishbone Story of this one, and now I have read it! BEAUTIFUL words and illustrations.

LibrarianRyan The full version of this book is my favorite collection of “fairy tales”. The Two jakes is my favorite story with Catskinella coming in second. 6y
