I received an audioARC from the publisher through Netgalley, all views are my own.
2.75 stars, The narrator wasn't great, and the ending was unsatisfactory. It was just overall a meh book. I did like the parallels between today's pandemic & the Spanish flu. But other than that it just fell flat. The characters were okay, but a bit flat. Only the one MC was really explored at all. There were too many unanswered questions at the end.
Set during the 1918 influenza pandemic, modern readers will find strong parallels to the COVID-19 pandemic. 17-year old Gianna & her family survived a brutal attack by a crazed axeman who was never caught. But now, years later, the maniac has returned & once again preys on Italian grocers & their families. Well-researched, the supernatural elements here don‘t gel into place. I liked the news articles but never quite connected with the characters.
