Confessions of Catherine de Medici
Confessions of Catherine de Medici | C W Gortner
7 posts | 14 read | 19 to read
"The truth is, not one of us is innocent. We all have sins to confess." So reveals Catherine de Medici, the last legitimate descendant of her family s illustrious line. Expelled from her native Florence, Catherine is betrothed to Henri, son of Francois I of France. In an unfamiliar realm, Catherine strives to create a role for herself through her patronage of the famous clairvoyant Nostradamus and her own innate gift as a seer. But in her fortieth year, Catherine is widowed, left alone with six young children in a kingdom torn apart by the ambitions of a treacherous nobility. Relying on her tenacity, wit, and uncanny gift for compromise, Catherine seizes power, intent on securing the throne for her sons, unaware that if she is to save France, she may have to sacrifice her ideals, her reputation, and the secret of her embattled heart."

483 pages. Biography of the all time famous queen who, by many claims, poisoned her enemies. The book allows to see the world from her perspective and join the royal family in probably the most terrifying times in history of France. However, the book is not historically accurate, the author admits it himself. Definitely a pick for an easy read.

Caroline2 @TrishB ohhhhh 😯 exciting!!! Is there anything better than having Waterstones vouchers to spend?? Enjoy! I really enjoyed The Last Queen. 👍🏻 5y
Caroline2 @TrishB OHHH I just thought, I posted two books to you today so don‘t buy The Wife or Beyond Black!!! 😆 5y
TrishB 😂❤️ thank you!! I really don‘t need to buy any.....but they‘re burning a hole in my purse!! 5y
Caroline2 @TrishB I bet! I got some for Christmas..think I had them two days before I spent the lot!! 😂 5y
Melissa_J @TrishB buy at least one of his books! The Last Queen is my favourite, followed by Mademoiselle Chanel, and The Queen‘s Vow. I don‘t recommend starting with his Tudor mystery series. 5y
Melissa_J I haven‘t read either of these two yet, but I imagine they will be great. I just received The Romanov Empress in the mail today 😊 5y
Caroline2 @Melissa_J ohhhh I‘m dying to read the Romanov one! Look forward to hearing what you think of it. 👍🏻 5y
TrishB @Melissa_J I don‘t like Tudors or historical mysteries really so probably wouldn‘t look at those! I‘ve screenshot this page for guidance in bookshop! 5y
MissMary These look very interesting 😍 5y

1. Always. Ebook, audio, and dead tree.
2. Sometimes. Most of my books come through overdrive, though.
3. Always! But I might renew them a few thousand times first. 🙄
4. Never! Though I do like highlighting in textbooks, if I own them.
5. Frequently.

Starting a new audio book. I used to live in Florence and now I have a slight obsession with the Medici.

Mehso-so

I've read a lot of Medici history. Half my humans are from Florence after all. This book has some interesting points to make, but in parts it was drier than dipping bread without the grappa.

After reading The Last Queen, I was so caught up with Gortner's writing- I could not put the book down! However I can not say the same for this book. Just a little over halfway& reading it is like having teeth pulled. Some parts are interesting, but overall I have been forcing myself to make progress in a book that is very slow. I'm very disappointed - Catherine De Medici is a very interesting figure, but his portrayal is vague &seems off. ⭐️⭐️/5

GinaAnderson That's really too bad. 8y
LitHousewife His book on Coco Chanel did nothing for me. I'm thinking his first was his best? 8y
Emily92Bibliophile @LitHousewife It seems so! I was really rooting for him there ... There is so little literature of Juana of Castile that doesn't portray her as a raving lunatic, and his interpretation of her "madness" was superb. I had my fingers crossed that he would also have a unique look on Catherine. Alas it was not so ? 8y

Caved and bought these through Amazon instead of getting a much needed haircut. While I have been greatly anticipating TRQ, still currently working through TSWHVIII/ nonfiction. Suggestions of any other good Catherine De Medici Fiction/ non fiction? Just let me know! Working through my Medieval and Renaissance influential men and women.
