The Sewing Girl's Tale
The Sewing Girl's Tale: A Story of Crime and Consequences in Revolutionary America | John Wood Sweet
5 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
A riveting Revolutionary Era drama of the first published rape trial in American history and its long, shattering aftermath, revealing how much has changed over two centuriesand how much has not. On a moonless night in the summer of 1793 a crime was committed in the back room of a New York brothelthe kind of crime that even victims usually kept secret. Instead, seventeen-year-old seamstress Lanah Sawyer did what virtually no one in US history had done before: she charged a gentleman with rape. Her accusation sparked a raw courtroom drama and a relentless struggle for vindication that threatened both Lanahs and her assailants lives. The trial exposed a predatory sexual underworld, sparked riots in the streets, and ignited a vigorous debate about class privilege and sexual double standards. The ongoing conflict attracted the nations top lawyers, including Alexander Hamilton, and shaped the development of American law. The crime and its consequences became a kind of parable about the power of seduction and the limits of justice. Eventually, Lanah Sawyer did succeed in holding her assailant accountablebut at a terrible cost to herself. Based on rigorous historical detective work, this book takes us from a chance encounter in the street into the sanctuaries of the citys elite, the shadows of its brothels, and the despair of its debtors prison. The Sewing Girls Tale shows that if our laws and our culture were changed by a persistent young woman and the power of words two hundred years ago, they can be changed again. Includes Photographs

I listened to this, and it was a hard book to listen to.
Lanah Sawyer is 17 years old in 1793, when her life is changed forever by rape. The sad thing, I realized while listening to this, is that very little has changed in 233 years since Sawyer pressed charges against her rapist. For some reason, society still ridicules a woman because of rape instead of the man. Sawyer reported and pressed charges being the first woman in America ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read to do so. I can guarantee that there were 100's of rapes before Sawyers. There are still.100's of rapes that go unreported today. #audio #nonfiction #bookspinbingo #readaway2024 3mo

This is a fascinating and thoroughly researched historical nonfiction book about the first published rape trial in the new US—a poor sewing girl, Lanah Sawyer, accused gentleman Henry Bedlow of raping her. His defense, of course, is that it was consensual. The book is surprisingly compelling; not that I didn‘t expect to enjoy it, but it isn‘t dry at all and there are several twists that I never saw coming. Recommended!

Finally starting this, after having had it in my library pile since July. 😬 It looks fascinating (and infuriating) and is already proving to be eminently readable. #thesewinggirlstale #johnwoodsweet #revolutionaryamerica #americanhistory #truecrime

#TheSewingGirlsTale #JohnWoodSweet #BookSpinBingo This is my #BookSpin book.

The Sewing Girl's Tale is a true historical drama of the first published rape in American history when in September 1793, Lanah Sawyer charged Harry Bedlow with rape. This book is very well-researched and reads like a narrative with factual information. I enjoyed this book very much and liked the trial notes as the author goes over how the trial came down.

EadieB Alexander Hamiltown was one of the lawyers working on her stepfather's seduction case in order to get justice for Lenah. Hamilton has had problems with women in his past. Not much has changed from 1793 rape cases to the present time. Rape cases are very hard to prosecute as it is one person against another and the truth is somewhere in the middle. 2y
EadieB I would like to thank LibraryThing and Henry Holt Books and Co for a copy of a book for an honest review. 2y
