Bi
Bi: The Hidden Culture, History and Science of Bisexuality | Dr Julia Shaw
8 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
Significant strides have been made in recent years in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights, visibility and empowerment, but the conversation is far from over. After years of feeling the crushing dearth of information on bisexuality, psychological scientist and bestselling author Dr Julia Shaw dug deep and found a colourful and fascinating world that she is bringing out of the shadows. It is a personal journey that starts with her own openly bisexual identity, and celebrates the resilience and beautiful diversity of the bi community. In Bi: The Hidden Culture, History and Science of Bisexuality, Shaw explores all that we know about the worlds largest sexual minority. From the hunt for a bi gene, to the relationship between bisexuality and consensual non-monogamy, to asylum seekers who need to prove their bisexuality in a court of law, there is more to explore than most have ever realised. This rigorous and fun book will challenge us to think deeper about who we are and how we love.

Bi will obviously be of most interest to bisexual readers, but it has plenty to offer a general audience too. I would especially recommend it to straight allies and loved ones of people who have recently come out as bi, as a solid resource for informing your understanding and conversations 💖💜💙 Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/bi-julia-shaw/

Overall a positive book full of information.

I did, however, have a few issues with it that have left me feeling disproportionately annoyed.

As usual, I've written down my thoughts in a ranty essay in my phone notes that I'll never post anywhere because expressing strong opinions on the internet never usually leads anywhere positive 😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Branwen Now I'm SUPER curious to read those notes! 🤭🩷💜💙 5mo

I like the terming of “monosexuality” for either hetero or homosexual, as in being attracted to only one gender, and “bisexuality” referring to being attracted to multiple genders.

The audiobook is narrated by the author and is easy to follow. I always appreciate a chance to learn more about history, visibility, and cultural shifts in the LGBTQIA+ world. I thought this was great.

erank58 Stacked! Glad to hear good feedback on the audio version 2y

This is such an important book. Bi-erasure is all too real, isolating, and invalidating, and until reading this book I hadn't realised the gaping space that it had filled. Queerness in all its forms should be celebrated, and this book gives an honest focus but with plenty of positivity. Even a self-proclaimed well-informed bi like myself still had plenty to learn from this book.

New arrivals today 💃💃💃💃

Fear not... I've also ordered a 4-tier book trolley 😋

@The_Penniless_Author got me curious about Tove Ditlevsen so that's a #blameitonRandy purchase 🤣🤣🤣

Otherwise I have two more Emily St John Mandels and a history of bisexuality 😊🌈

tokorowilliamwallace Quality nonfiction picks! I considered doing backlist reading of Emily St. John Mandel with these volumes (or at least one), but I couldn't decide, so never got to any. I'll see if my libraries carry any. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @tokorowilliamwallace Thanks! I'm looking forward to them. I loved the Glass Hotel and Station Eleven has been weirdly haunting too. 2y
The_Penniless_Author You forgot to mention that I've never actually read Tove Ditlevsen, so if you don't like it you can #blameitonRae'sbookbuyingaddiction instead 😉 2y
