Blue World
Blue World | Robert R. McCammon
11 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
A novella and twelve stories from a master of supernatural horror Father John has lived his whole life without knowing a womans touch. Hard at first, his self-denial grew easier over time, as he learned to master his urges with a regimen of prayer, cold showers, and jigsaw puzzles. That changed the day that Debra Rocks entered his confessional. A rough-talking adult film actress, she has come to ask him to pray for a murdered costar. Her cinnamon perfume infects Father John, and after she departs he becomes obsessed. Around the corner from his church is a neon-lit alley of sin. He goes there hoping to save her life before he damns himself. That is Blue World, the novella that anchors this collection of chilling stories by Robert R. McCammon. Although monsters, demons, and murderers fill these pages, in McCammons world the most terrifying landscape of all is the barren wasteland of a lost mans soul.

As indicated by the first line, the reader can tell all is not right in this short story. All the scientists can say is that maybe something passed by and that is why there is this hellscape on earth. We follow Johnny and Brenda in a small Nebraska town as they try to survive their new reality where gravel can become quicksand, people can combust, and rooms can contain different dimensions. As always, there is heart in McCammon‘s horror which👇🏼

Reggie makes him a favorite of mine. 2y
vivastory Have you read They Thirst? I noticed my library has a copy & it sounds intriguing. 2y
Reggie @vivastory I haven‘t, there‘s like 2 of his books I haven‘t read. They Thirst and Bethany‘s Sin. But I‘ve heard great things about They Thirst. 2y
TheNeverendingTBR @Reggie Highly recommend They Thirstand of course Swan Song. 2y

Like most short story collections, there are a couple of very good stories, ones that are okay and some that aren't so good. This one is no exception, it's a mixed bag.

I'd still recommend though because there's a few crackers in here! 😁

Reggie I loved this book. He was another one who turned me on to a love of short stories. The one about the grey houses but that family who loves red and feels cool in the fire moves in next door is my favorite. 3y
TheNeverendingTBR @Reggie The Red House, yes that was one of my favourites alongside Nightcrawlers (the one with the Vietnam veteran who's nightmares come true) 3y
braddsibbersen I've found his long novels not to my liking but I'm still curious about his short fiction. Could someone recommend just one of his shorts? 3y

Another #BookSpinBingo square marked off this month. @TheAromaofBooks

Robert McCammon became a favorite of mine after reading Swan's Song. I felt this was a strong collection of stories that showcased McCammon's writing style well.

July has been a horrible reading month for me - I‘ve only finished one book. 😟
I decided to try this collection of short stories from one of my favorite authors. Maybe it will kick me out of this seemingly never ending reading slump I‘ve been in. 😒📖

TheNeverendingTBR McCammon is magnificent, I've not read this one yet though; how was it? 6y
Velvetsun @trioxin_sematary McCammon is indeed incredible. His story, Doom City, is my favorite short story I‘ve ever read. This collection is excellent 😊👍🏻📖 6y

#getmovin In the short story, The Red House, 18yo Bobby Deaken wants to leave Greystone Bay,to not live in a grey house amongst all the other grey houses, and to not work the same factory job his dad has had all his life. Then, the house across the street gets painted red and the Sikes move in. Mr.Sikes will encourage Bobby to discover the world. Bobby‘s dad, so threatened by change will, the red house, #burnittotheground while all the Sikes 👇🏼

Reggie are inside. This wouldn‘t be a McCammon story if we didn‘t find out that the Sikes are made of fire and love fire and while the house is going up in flames the Sikes‘s kids are sitting in their parents laps laughing. (edited) 7y

Centique Oh wow! This sounds amazing. And yes I‘m a fan too 😍 7y
Reggie @Cinfhen @rohit-sawant @Centique you guys are so sweet.😊 7y
Suet624 Say what?? 7y
Reggie @Suet624 Which part? Lol. McCammon writes fantasy/horror, but they mostly all have some hope and redemption. This is his short story collection. But if you ever think you‘d read him, start with A Boy‘s Life. If you can handle magical realism, it will be one of the best books of your life. 7y
Suet624 @Reggie Thanks for the recommendation! I‘ll go and find it! 7y

The novella that anchors this collection of horror stories is about a priest, a porn actress, and the serial killer that stalks them both. There's a part where the priest could have slept with the porn actress but he doesn't. The teenager I was at the time was shocked when I read this. I was struggling with things at the time. I still think about this story years later, that with such a writing decision, the author could #takemetochurch.

Cinfhen Power of a good story 💙 8y

I don't recall many of the short stories, 'The Pin' has never left me. The novella is quite good also
