Stories from The Tenants Downstairs
Stories from The Tenants Downstairs | Sidik Fofana
Set in a Harlem high rise, a stunning debut about a tight-knit cast of characters grappling with their own personal challenges while the forces of gentrification threaten to upend life as they know it. Like Gloria Naylors The Women of Brewster Place and Lin Manuel Mirandas In the Heights, Sidik Fofanas electrifying collection of eight interconnected stories showcases the strengths, struggles, and hopes of one residential community in a powerful storytelling experience. Each short story follows a tenant in the Banneker Homes, a low-income high rise in Harlem where gentrification weighs on everyones mind. There is Swan in apartment 6B, whose excitement about his friends release from prison jeopardizes the life hes been trying to lead. Mimi, in apartment 14D, who hustles to raise the child she had with Swan, waitressing at Roscoes and doing hair on the side. And Quanneisha B. Miles, a former gymnast with a good education who wishes she could leave Banneker for good, but cant seem to escape the buildings gravitational pull. We root for these characters and more as they weave in and out of each others lives, endeavoring to escape from their pasts and blaze new paths forward for themselves and the people they love. Stories from the Tenants Downstairs brilliantly captures the joy and pain of the human experience and heralds the arrival of a uniquely talented writer.

This is a low pick for me, which is on me not the book. The book is excellent. I appreciate how the language and tone shift from pov to pov inside of the stories, and each tenant is a full person. I think I just needed more depth at the moment. Some of these stories are only 10-15 pages and while you get a feel for each person you also feel like a lot of their story is missing.
Overall though this is excellently constructed.

A story set in a huge apartment complex in Harlem where we meet several of its residents. Connected through the building, but several also through the local school.

About gentrification, surviving and how strangers see may not be how you see yourself

I‘m glad this was drawn as my #doublespin for January, I‘ve been meaning to read it for so long!

It‘s a book of short stories with each one from the point of view of a different tenant in a big apartment complex in Harlem. Themes of a school system with teachers who aren‘t in touch with their student‘s needs, gentrification, and living in constant struggle to make enough for rent. Brilliant writing that lands you right in the thick of it.

Soubhiville It‘s pouring rain today, supposed to be wet all day long. It‘s a good day for naps and reading, Sietje agrees. 12mo
TheAromaofBooks Dumping rain here, too! I can't believe how dark it is outside today!!! 12mo
CoffeeNBooks We have an unexpected day off- schools around here are all closed because of the storms were supposed to get this afternoon with high winds and possible tornadoes. My cats are so happy that I'm at home reading today! 12mo

Hooked_on_books How are you and the critters settling in? 12mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books we‘re doing pretty well, thanks. It doesn‘t feel like home yet, but I know that will come with time. I have a bit more furniture that I need to pick up (from friends), then the move in and unpacking will be complete. 12mo
Hooked_on_books That‘s good to hear. Sounds like you‘re on a good path. And Sietje looks comfortably moved in! 😄 12mo

I could not believe how much I became engrossed in each characters' story as well as in the setting that Sidik Fofana depicts them in. The powerful messages come through with each resident, with issues like poverty, crime, affordable housing, and education being brought front and center for the reader. These short vignettes, these slices of life, will stick with you long after you finish reading this collection.

“From a superb new literary talent, a rich, lyrical collection of stories about a tight-knit cast of characters grappling with their own personal challenges while the forces of gentrification threaten to upend life as they know it.”
This story gives soul to the people who live in older buildings who should not just be a number in a boardroom, but should be seen as complex individuals who need to stay in their homes for so many reasons.

I was fortunate to hear the author speak at a 2022 Brooklyn Book Festival session on newly published writers. He was a quiet, humble speaker, and his journey intrigued me. A few weeks later, I listened to his interview on NPR's podcast, Book of the Day and it sealed the deal.

I am so glad I bumped this collection of short stories to the my list.
