The Sunken City
The Sunken City | Emma V. R. Noyes

Amare Bellamy is not a witch. Orphaned as a child and raised on a ship by the most dangerous men in the Caribbean, Amare is one thing and one thing alone: a pirate. And pirates hate magic. After a fateful storm plunges her to the depths of the ocean, Amare wakes to find herself in a strange new world: an underwater kingdom, where magic exists, but is strictly outlawed by the King-a man who claims to be her true father. As Amare struggles to fit into her new role as Princess of the Sunken City, she finds herself tangled in a web of love between two brothers-one good, one not so good. And as strange powers manifest within her, she must question everything she was raised to believe-especially if she has any hope of stopping the evil brewing at the bottom of the ocean.

4.3/5⭐️

Okay, I LOVED this book. The author almost completely slayed the dialogue. I loved most of the characters & I'm immediately starting the 2nd book RN! My favorite YA Fic that I have read in a while. That being said, it was published too soon. (At least the Kindle version) It was missing a good thorough edit & is the main reason I'm not rating it a 5. It really was pretty sloppy in some places.
But still AMAZING! Continued in comments...

idealityandme ...If you like pirates, funny dialogue, mermaid vibes, magic, or unique underwater worlds, this has it all! Just keep an open mind that it definitely appears like it didn't get a thorough edit before publishing. I really did truly enjoy it despite the errors:) I hope some of you give it a read! 1y

I finally put my July #bookspin list together! I suppose the good news is that I don't have to wait long to know which numbers are drawn 😅

I didn't manage a bingo for June (only one square away 😭), but I did cross off 11 books, which is pretty good for me!

KateReadsYA I thought this book was everything. I've almost read the entire trilogy in a week, hoping to finish book 3 today! I thought it was exciting, adventurous, and captivating. It's like nothing I've read before, I think that was what kept me so engaged in it. Usually not into love triangles but Amare is young and it's normal to question love, especially when you are raised on a pirate ship, no?! Super cool world building and magic system in my opinion! 2y
brittanyreads Ahhh, sadly I didn't get to finish this before it went back to the library ? I loved the setting most of all. I am forever drawn to oceans, ships, and islands. The author really made you feel like you were there. It took a bit to get into the flow of it...but I also really liked the "pirate speak" haha 2y
BookmarkTavern I didn‘t manage to get to this one, but it sounds so much fun that I think I‘ll leave my hold on and get to it eventually! ❤️ 2y
GirlNamedJesse My copy literally came in yesterday. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m still looking forward to reading it, though!! 2y

tokorowilliamwallace I started getting back into further progress with another 'elemental'-themed YA fantasy today!---Sara Raasch's Snow Like Ashes. I like the FMC as fierce, independent, stubborn, and a skilled, shifting assassin type---she reminds me of Bin from Mistborn. But then kingdom politics alliances comes in and reduces her verve and shine as a character! I disapprove of this move. Thankfully, some of the previous passion is shown again. 2y
KateReadsYA @tokorowilliamwallace Love a stubborn FMC and this magical world sounds very intriguing. When politics is the main focus I tend to snooze a but unless there's some twists to the plot and some assassin ass kicking. 😎 2y
KateReadsYA @persephone1408 @AbigailJaneBlog @BrittanyReads @ozma.of.oz I am soooo looking forward to this one as well. So glad it's underwater. I have no idea what we are in store for but I hope it's beautiful and magical. 2y
tokorowilliamwallace @KateReadsYA Oh no, I love details of political intrigue in fiction, it's just the character so reduced by the switch in expected roles; she's much more vibrant and exciting as a badass, and the 'development' seems more like a trope. I noticed it parallels Sanderson's use of the same for Vin in Mistborn. 👎 Stop doing this, authors! But at least this is a female author, so we get some defiant social comments. 2y
tokorowilliamwallace @KateReadsYA Probably interested in Robert Jackson Bennett as an author in general the most out of these options---something epic, sweeping, ambitious, complex, dense, informative. But I'm terrible at keeping up or focused for a series, since I'm too much of a slow and scattered, chaotic, nonlinear mood reader. I generally sample miscellaneous volumes from various series and treat as standalones, and then switch at will to others for novelty. 2y

A majestic pirate adventure mixed in with an underwater kingdom, magic and romance! The word building done so well, from chapter one we're thrown into pirate action and see this wonderful underwater kingdom. I also really enjoyed the love triangle and friendship between Amare and Shoa. The thing that did bother me about the book is the pacing. The ending left on a cliffhanger, so I'm really excited to see how Amare's story continues in the sequel.
