H of H Playbook | Anne Carson
8 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
'Fans of Anne Carson, rejoice!... Carson's depth of knowledge about Greek mythology coupled with her poetic sensibility and illustrations is sure to breathe new life into this oft-told story.' Lit Hub H of H Playbook is an explosion of thought, in drawings and language, about a Greek tragedy called Herakles by the 5th-century BC poet Euripides. In myth Herakles is an embodiment of manly violence who returns home after years of making war on enemies and monsters (his famous "Labours of Herakles") to find he cannot adapt himself to a life of peacetime domesticity. He goes berserk and murders his whole family. Suicide is his next idea. Amazingly, this does not happen. Due to the intervention of his friend Theseus, Herakles comes to believe he is not, after all, indelibly stained by his own crimes, nor is his life without value. It remains for the reader to judge this redemptive outcome. "I think there is no such thing as an innocent landscape," said Anselm Kiefer, painter of forests grown tall on bones.

I would usually wait a bit before posting my favorites of the year, however I started looking at my GR account & before I knew it I already had quite a few books that I wanted to include on my list for the year., I noticed a few posts of 22 of '22. I decided to post my 25 favorites of the year. Honorable mentions go to Nelly Sachs' “Flight & Metamorphosis,“ “Janet Malcolm's “In the Freud Archives,“ William Gresham's “Nightmare Alley“. Also, I am

vivastory currently halfway through the complete poetry of Emily Dickinson & toyed with including it on my list. I would be remiss if I didn't mention what a solace it has been & the impact it has had on me this year & I am certain that it will be on my best of '23 list. Here are my favorite books of the year. Picking an *absolute* favorite of the year is impossible, but the top contenders are: Moby-Dick, King Lear, Light in August, Pedro Paramo, FSG Poetry (edited) 1y

vivastory @BarbaraBB What a thoughtful gift! I hope you find one you like 📚 1y
vivastory @batsy I have read a few books by Tutuola & this has by far been my favorite. If you do read MD I will be very interested to see what you think. I tackled it in segments of 75-80 pages per week & this made it very manageable, esp as the chapters are very brief (but so memorable) & as they often are alternating between focusing on different characters or w/ Melville digressing, I found that it really kept my attention. 1y
vivastory @Megabooks If you haven't read Alice Munro yet, I think you'd love her. I think that you'd also really dig Zorrie. (edited) 1y
Liz_M @batsy @vivastory 💙💙💙 Moby-dick 1y

The physical object is like a sketchbook full of bits of text pasted in plus bits of mostly abstract art. It‘s a retelling of an ancient play: Euripides‘ Herakles, translated rather loosely by the brilliant Anne Carson who incorporates scenes from today, from Chernobyl, from 1920s Russia and more. The tragedy comes through like a Minotaur through the heart. And still manages to end with some hope. #CanLit #poetry #multigenre

you go read a novel by Jane

final paragraph tucks the death of Dr Grant inbetween
a newlywed hero and heroine.

This defies characterization. It‘s a poem, a play, a retelling, a translation, an art collection. Anne Carson has once again created something special and enduring. This is another library book that I‘m immediately ordering my own copy of. #BBRCAdultAnIndieBookByATraditionallyPublishedAuthor #Booked2022ThinkGreek @LibrarianRyan @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen

Carson's mixed media translation of Euripides' Herakles is a postmodernist spin on one of the most tragic stories of heroism from the ancient Greeks. Herakles of Hera, our titular character, has returned from a decade of the Labours. As H admits after enumerating the challenges he has faced, "the list of my Labours looks philanthropic for about the first half then begins drifting towards trophyism." Upon his return home he has to address ?

vivastory the trouble that his family has dealt with in his absence & once he has done so he is visited by the wrath of Hera. I read this play previously, years ago & it had always struck me as particularly memorable. It was wonderful reading it in Carson's translation, particularly in how she draws parallels between notions of heroism in ancient times & modern times. There's passages of striking poetic power which balances the illustrations & minor humor. 2y
