Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12
Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12: 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning | Peter Liljedahl
2 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
A thinking student is an engaged student Teachers often find it difficult to implement lessons that help students go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations. In fact, institutional norms and habits that permeate all classrooms can actually be enabling "non-thinking" student behavior. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into this practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. This guide Provides the what, why, and how of each practice and answers teachers most frequently asked questions Includes firsthand accounts of how these practices foster thinking through teacher and student interviews and student work samples Offers a plethora of macro moves, micro moves, and rich tasks to get started Organizes the 14 practices into four toolkits that can be implemented in order and built on throughout the year When combined, these unique research-based practices create the optimal conditions for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning, and have the power to transform mathematics classrooms like never before.

Pickpick

I highly recommend this book if you're a math teacher or just interested in math education. It seems that a number of schools here in Canada have started adopting some of the ideas, though it's a slow process as curriculum requirements are strict and resources are limited (at least here in Ontario).

kwmg40 @mcctrish The author is at Simon Fraser U in Vancouver but did a lot of his classroom research in Ontario schools. I hope you'll find his practical tips helpful if you end up getting the book. Good luck with the upcoming school year! 1y
kwmg40 @Andrew65 I think this book is an excellent read for anyone interested in math education. (I have work colleagues in the UK and should learn to say “maths“!) I'm not a math teacher myself, but I work on math education software. 1y

kwmg40 @mcctrish That's a good idea. It's great that PL worked with your board! Also, a friend of mine mentioned that, if you're a member of the Ontario College of Teachers, they have copies through their library for members. 1y

Andrew65 @kwmg40 I was a Primary school teacher, then head teacher so obviously taught and was responsible for all subjects. My favourite role was maths leader / coordinator and as head discussions about maths, as well as working with maths lead to agree our maths strategy. 1y
kwmg40 @Andrew65 Wow, you definitely have a lot of experience with math education! If you ever do pick up a copy of this book, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the ideas. I'm sure you'd have good insight to share. 1y
