Making Love with the Land
Making Love with the Land | Joshua Whitehead
15 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
Much-anticipated non-fiction from the author of the Giller-longlisted, GG-shortlisted and Canada Reads-winning novel Jonny Appleseed. In the last few years, following the publication of his debut novel Jonny Appleseed, Joshua Whitehead has emerged as one of the most exciting and important new voices on Turtle Island. Now, in this first non-fiction work, Whitehead brilliantly explores Indigeneity, queerness, and the relationships between body, language and land through a variety of genres (essay, memoir, notes, confession). Making Love with the Land is a startling, heartwrenching look at what it means to live as a queer Indigenous person "in the rupture" between identities. In sharp, surprising, unique piecesa number of which have already won awardsWhitehead illuminates this particular moment, in which both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples are navigating new (and old) ideas about "the land." He asks: What is our relationship and responsibility towards it? And how has the land shaped our ideas, our histories, our very bodies? Here is an intellectually thrilling, emotionally captivating love songa powerful revelation about the library of stories land and body hold together, waiting to be unearthed and summoned into word.

Life got ahold of me and I forgot to update, but I completed #PortlandBookWeek with a blackout #BookstoreBingo! Bookish was my last stop on the whirlwind 24 bookstore tour and I couldn‘t have picked a better way to end it.

The tagged book + The Ballad of Perilous Graves were my audiobook companions for it and honestly neither one roped me in like I hoped. But the journey was a thrill and reward in itself!

LiteraryinPA What an amazing adventure! 5mo

Some days you‘ve gotta eat a McGriddle and read a powerful book that actively defies all those colonial genre boundaries. Joshua Whitehead is an otâcimow (storyteller) to revel in. #gaymay

This week‘s small but mighty library haul. I‘m so glad I get to read nonfiction with my eyeballs again! It was all but impossible to squeeze it in while I was immersed in Proust. #gaymay

xicanti @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I have high hopes for it. 2y

Reading Whitehead demands full focus from me, as I work to take full meaning from his poetic language, to gain further understanding of a different culture, a different experience of the world, interspersed with the use of a different language.
This is a collection of non-fiction essays, but it defies the dry confines of that description. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 'Writing as a Rupture' particularly is a fascinating meditation on what autobiography means, the introduction of the idea of biotext, and how western, colonialist traditions and definitions of genre and writing hem in a more expansive idea of storytelling known in Indigenous tradition. The concern that critical analysis is not leaving space for a modern, changing understanding of Indigenous writing, analysis currently wants to label a tradition and tie it to the past. The necessity of boundaries in what a writer, a person, chooses to share, without necessitating that any literary critic or reporter has a right to that person's trauma as 'background' to stories published. How trauma narrative has overwhelmed the idea of non fiction testimony, the need to seek balance as well as truth. 2/? 2y
Robotswithpersonality Whitehead discusses the labelling of his writing in other points in the collection, also referring to creative non-fiction, and I think the exploration of labels, in writing and in people, as he interacts with his Two-Spirit, queer Indigeneity, were the places I felt most able to relate, to the pull between curiousity and yearning for acceptance, wanting to leave things open, not be tied, but also wanting to be recognized appropriately, respected, belonging. 3/? 2y
Robotswithpersonality 4/5 The other major theme that struck me was pain, encountering personal emotional and physical injury, loss, and grief, and sharing these same feelings also experienced by family and friends.
Given the intimate and difficult nature of the topics discussed, the trigger warnings are lengthy:

Robotswithpersonality 5/5 ⚠️ author describes SA personally experienced; discussions of mental health, suicide, suicidal ideation; drug overdose; residential school program genocide and trauma; ED, fatphobia/internalized fatphobia, self image/body image issues; frank and natural accounting of bodily fluids and bodily functions, so if you're easily icked, exercise caution; pandemic isolation. 2y

Before today, if you'd told me there was a poetic, nigh adorable, way to describe an atomic explosion's trademark mushroom cloud, I would have been skeptical to say the least....

My patio is looking groovy with a light snow! I really enjoyed this book by JW, he writes quite lyrically and it was great to listen to him on audio.

A blend of essay, confessional memoir and poetry—I found this lyrical nonfiction collection has an academic tone that demanded a certain amount of intellectual effort on my part. I re-listened to much of it, then went back to the parts in the audiobook I‘d bookmarked & listened again. I really liked it, even though didn‘t understand all of it. There are Nehiyaw (Cree) words throughout & Joshua Whitehead narrates his own work. #Canadian #Indigenous

The last six months of 2019 were a whirlwind of depressive bouts sprouting from loss, mourning, sexual assault, abandonment, colonial violence, imperialism, state-sanctioned genocide—all of which for me normalizes an absurd fact of Indigenous life: it hurts to live.

I love my body, by which I mean my selves. I need to tell you that. It goes without saying that loving one‘s own indigeneity is always a political act.

I identify as two-spirit, which means much more than simply my sexual preference within western ways of knowing, but rather that I am queer, femme, iskwewyaw, male, nehiyaw, and situated this way in relation to my homelands and communities.
(Note: I‘ve transcribed this from the audiobook and am uncertain how the Cree words for ‘woman‘ and ‘Cree‘ appear in the printed text.)

I have long argued that the body we inhabit, in its zippered coat of skin, will always be tied to the body of text we create.
