Ralph Waldo Emerson: Essays: First and Second Series
Ralph Waldo Emerson: Essays: First and Second Series: A Library of America Paperback Classic | Ralph Waldo Emerson
8 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
A compilation of the best essays written by the father of transcendentalism, with selections from Emersons lectures on history, art, politics, and more In the words of Harold Bloom, Emerson's prose is his triumph, both as eloquence and as insight. After Shakespeare, it matches anything else in the language. Here are Ralph Waldo Emerson's classic essays, including the exhortation to Self-Reliance, the embattled realizations of Circles and Experience, and the groundbreaking achievement of Nature. Our most eloquent champion of individualism, Emerson acknowledges at the same time the countervailing pressures of society in American life. Even as he extols what he calls the great and crescive self, he dramatizes and records its vicissitudes. Also gathered here are his wide-ranging discourses on history, art, politics, friendship, love, and much more. For almost thirty years, The Library of America has presented America's best and most significant writing in acclaimed hardcover editions. Now, a new series, Library of America Paperback Classics, offers attractive and affordable books that bring The Library of America's authoritative texts within easy reach of every reader. Each book features an introductory essay by a leading writer, as well as a detailed chronology of the author's life and career, an essay on the choice and history of the text, and notes.

#currentlyreading My favorite student (mentioned previously) brought this 1926 edition to me last week and said she wanted me to read it so we could discuss. I‘ve read Emerson before, but I‘m rereading and refreshing now. It has some delightful annotations from her and previous owners. “Self-Reliance” seems to be her favorite.

“At times the whole world seems to be in conspiracy to importune you with emphatic trifles. Friend, client, child, sickness, fear, want, charity, all knock at once at thy closet door and say,—'Come out unto us.' But keep thy state; come not into their confusion. The power men possess to annoy me I give them by a weak curiosity. No man can come near me but through my act.”

MrBook One of my favorites. 👌🏻 7y

The Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson | Ralph Waldo Emerson

A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. I am arrived at last in the presence of a man so real and equal, that I may drop even those undermost garments of dissimulation, courtesy, and second thought, which men never put off, and may deal with him with the simplicity and wholeness with which one chemical atom meets another.
