This essay collection was a mixed bag for me. Many of the essays are dated at this point and a lot are infused with his goofy, Midwestern humor that doesn‘t resonate with me, even though I‘m from the Midwest. Amidst that humor, however, are profound insights into our culture and life in general. Where Saunders really shines, though, is when he writes about writing. I just wished there had been more of those essays in the collection. 3⭐️

I don‘t know what book to attribute this George Saunders quote to so I picked this one.

“Reading is a form of prayer, a guided meditation that briefly makes us believe we‘re someone else, disrupting the delusion that we‘re permanent and at the center of the universe. Suddenly (we‘re saved!) other people are real again, and we‘re fond of them.”

So far so so so good. I had no idea that Saunders had a book of essays.

Reading this, and I can't help but think of a certain presidential candidate whose name rhymes with Rump.

A fantastic collection. A real mix of topics are covered and it's all written incredibly engagingly. If you are a fan of David Foster Wallace's non-fiction this is a must and if unsure have a look at 'Ask The Optimist!' and then get this book, highly recommend!
