A remarkable novel by one of the most exciting new voices in Latin America today This is the story of who Feliciana is, and of who Paloma was. I had wanted to get to know them, but I realised right away that the people I needed to know better were my sister Leandra and my mother. Myself. I came to understand that you can't really know another woman until you know yourself... Weaving together two parallel narratives, Witches tells the story of Feliciana, an indigenous curandera or healer, and Zoe, a journalist: two women who meet through the murder of Feliciana's cousin Paloma. In the tiny village of San Felipe in Jalisco province, where traditional ways and traditional beliefs are a present reality, Feliciana tells the story of her life, her community's acceptance of her as a genuine curandera and the difficult choices faced by her joyful and spirited cousin Paloma who is both a healer and a Muxe - a trans woman. Growing up in Mexico City, Zoe attempts to find her way in a society straitjacketed by its hostile macho culture. But it is Feliciana's and Paloma's stories that draw her own story out of her, taking her on a journey to understanding her place in the world and the power of her voice. This captivating novel of two Mexicos envisions the writer as a healer and offers a generous and distinctly female way of understanding the complex world we all inhabit. There are great, even illuminating points & themes in here, but the intertwining narratives felt flat.

Despite engaging characters, & the absolutely fascinating context (the first female healer in an indigenous community that saw the role as a man‘s), it read like the recap of what would have been a compelling story.

Absolutely loved the pictured quote though.

I clearly had a lot of thoughts, and I don't regret reading it, but this one wasn't quite my cup of tea. Not enough detail on the parts I found interesting, but then we come to sudden, incredibly graphic descriptions of sexual assault...why?! So much unnecessary repetition...my favorite of my tabs serendipitiously ended up on top of this pile so I turned it right side up: "WE GET IT. Your father drank sweet coffee and you do too." ☕️

Read for bookclub. I‘d recommend a format other than audio for this- it wasn‘t clear when point of view was shifting which made it very confusing. I assume in print there was some sort of break in the text to make it clearer.

I liked the parts about the ceremonies and mushrooms, and found the lineage of knowledge passing interesting, but didn‘t connect much with the characters. Overall just ok for me.

Definitely check your content warnings!

I liked this a lot. I seem to be on a witch theme this month. Set in Mexico. Based on an actual person (amazing). Excellent translation. Fantastic cover. Definitely a pick.

My mother is the opposite. Words come easily to her, and she has a tendency to start up long conversations with people on the street, in a queue for coffee, or wherever. One time, a woman called our house by mistake and they ended up chatting for over an hour. When she hung up, my mother had said, "Oh, that was Raquel. She dialled the wrong number but we really hit it off."

AmyG Ha, your mother reminds me of my husband. He always talks to people and asks them so many questions about themselves. Me? I say HI and call it a day. 2y
charl08 @AmyG it's a great quote isn't it. It made me laugh. 2y
