1. I like so many, but I‘ll go with one called Ex Libris where you build a library collection! It‘s actually fun, there is some fantasy and humor mixed in!
2. Tagged book is a MG story of a girl in Malaysia who is trying to solve the mystery of her friends death at a large Scrabble competition!

A year after her BFF, Trina Low, died during a championship Scrabble game, Najwa Bakri is ready to enter a tournament again. But there is a rumour that Trina was murdered.

This was an intriguing mystery though I wondered how true to life the 15 and 16 year olds' conversations were. Also, by the story's timeline Trina died in Nov. 2021 but the characters were already familiar with each other from the annual tournaments, which seems unlikely.

DivineDiana It‘s a mystery! Good observations. 🕵️‍♂️ 1y

Hmm... I like the concept, but the narrator sounds more like a grandmother than a teenager to me. It's really disrupting my ability to get lost in the story 😕

Had no idea what genre I was in the mood for, but knew I wanted something with a mystery element. Set my Libby filters to Audiobooks, Available Now, Mystery, and stumbled across the YA Thriller set in the world of competitive Scrabble! Murder and word games. I'm in.

peanutnine Score! Libby filters are so underrated 1y

You tell me about an unabashedly Malaysian YA mystery set in the world of competitive Scrabble; I jump on it. QUEEN OF THE TILES is wonderful so far. Love the energy; love the characters; love the writing. Ms Hanna is one of those rare and glorious present tense writers who doesn‘t skew purple and who understands the past perfect is 99% unnecessary in her chosen style. My mental ear is happy.

rockpools I‘m convinced! 2y

xicanti @dabbe I think he was still in Sleepy Air-Lick mode. Casey is decidedly not a morning dog. 2y

I was excited to learn that this YA mystery by Malaysian writer Alkaf is set during a Scrabble tournament that takes place in Johor, a state in the south of the Malay peninsula. We don't get a lot in terms of place because of the closed-room setting of the tournament, but Alkaf spins an entertaining story that kept me hooked & turning the pages & made me bring out our Scrabble set for a few shouty family games. A solid 3-star read.

mabell I love this! And great photo! 2y
LiteraryinPA My husband is a champion international Scrabble player, and we thought this book was fantastic! It really captured what it‘s like at tournaments. 2y

batsy @LiteraryinLawrence That's so cool! Yeah, I found the competition element really interesting. Just the vast amount of knowledge they have 🙌🏾 2y
Cortg Ooooh, I'd like to read this one, if only for the scrabble tournaments which I know little about and I always love a book taking place in other countries around the world. Now I want to break out my Scrabble board 😀 2y
batsy @Cortg I think it's a fun, light read when you're in the mood for one! And I like how she works the competition into the storyline. Definitely motivated to play more Scrabble since I read it 😆 2y
LeahBergen The book and the shouty family games both sound fun! 2y

What FUN! (4-1-1) Najwa is back for her first Scrabble tournament one year after her best friend died. It has been a year of grief, depression and anxiety, nevertheless Najwa is ready to be Queen of the Tiles. At the tournament it is difficult to tell friends from enemies and Najwa realizes that her friend‘s death may have been more than a terrible accident. Likable characters and nicely paced. I need to build my vocabulary and play a game! 4+⭐️

What a cool idea for a novel! I really was impressed by this story set during a youth Scrabble championship in Kuala Lumpur. I have been to many a Scrabble tournament since my husband plays and this book got the atmosphere just right! Word nerds of all stripes will appreciate this book about friendship, grief, and coming to terms with the tiles you‘ve been given in life.

LiteraryinPA @wanderer15 @Kempii Any other Scrabblers who I should tag? 3y
Kempii Ooh I will have to check this out and potentially add it to the CoCo‘s media library of books featuring Scrabble! Thanks for the tag! 3y

#currentlyreading #preview #julyrso2022 #digital A book set in Malaysia about a girl who will need to find her best friend‘s killer to help process her grief set in the world of competitive scrabble. So good.
