Cold: A Novel | Mariko Tamaki
10 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
A boy, a murder, a girl, a secret. From award-winning author Mariko Tamaki comes Cold, a haunting YA novel about a shocking homicide in a quiet town and four students who knew too much and said too little. This is the story of a boy who diedand a girl who wants to know why. Todd Mayer is dead. Now he's some sort of ghost, hovering over his body, which has just been found in the town park, naked and frozen in the snow. As detectives investigate Todd's homicide, talking to the very people who are responsible for how he died, Todd replays the events that lead him to his end in the park. Georgia didn't know Todd. But she cant stop thinking about him. Maybe it's because theyre both outcasts at their school, or because theyre both queer. It might also be because Georgia has a feeling shes seen Todd somewhere before, somewhere he wasnt supposed to be. In the vein of The Lovely Bones, this dual narrative is told through the voices of Todd in his afterlife and Georgia as she uncovers the truth behind his death, resulting in an immersive, emotional, and provocative read.

WOW. I was feeling kind of meh abt this bc reading a #book about a murdered #gay kid isn't the best cup of tea but damn, it really picked up. The story is told via 2POVs, Todd's (the ghost of the murdered kid) and Georgia, also a #queer kid who just happens to live in the same area. Georgia's POV took me a second to get into bc I'm kind of over HS drama but she grew on me and the end had me blood pumping mouth open. I gave it 5⭐ on GR & 4.75 on SG

This is just barely a pick for me, but if you are in the mood for a YA mystery with queer protagonists, it may work even better for you. It‘s a quick read, a page-turner, yet also melancholy. I look forward to hearing what the other members of my YA bookclub will have to say about it on Thursday. #LGBTQ #CanadianAuthor

I‘m the kind of reader who is continually translating the storyline into a movie in my head. This sentence had me seeing the teacher McVeeter stitching up his broken strap while also making a dramatic exit from the staff room. 🤪

“The main feature of the crest was the taboo of stepping on it.”
I‘ve only once encountered mention of this kind of taboo—it was in The Love Songs of WEB Du Bois—so when it came up in the tagged book, I decided to Google it. Turns out all kinds of educational institutions have it, including Boston University (pictured). Have you attended a school with a floor crest that wasn‘t to be stepped on?

AmyG University of Michigan has one, too. 3y
Lindy @AmyG Thanks for commenting. Did you step on it? 3y

On the far west side of the park was a kid‘s playground, with a set of swings, a pair of climbable abstract shapes on giant springs, and a towering rope spiderweb for aspiring spiders.

Ready to start my day with a new book: Cold is for my YA book club next Thursday. Gingerbread with lemon curd is also a good way to start the day.

This book snuck up on me. By the end I was bawling. Mariko Tamaki's deceptively simple prose lures you into the worlds of these two gay teens and then quietly pulls the rug out from under you. The book is about a queer teen who dies, but it's not about explicit violence. It's about how homophobia makes queer kids vulnerable, makes it so difficult for queer adults to mentor queer kids, about how one persuasive kid can make "nice" kids go along.
