Freedom from Fear
Freedom from Fear: And Other Writings | Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi's collected writingsedited by her late husband, who the ruling military junta prevented from visiting Burma as he was dying of cancerreflects her greatest hopes and fears for her fellow Burmese people, and her concern about the need for international cooperation in the continuing fight for Burma's freedom. Bringing together her most powerful speeches, letters and interviews, this remarkable collection gives a voice to Burma's woman of destiny, whose fate remained in the hands of her enemies for fifteen years, before her release from house arrest in 2010.

Within a system which denies the existence of basic human rights, fear tends to be the order of the day. Fear of imprisonment, fear of torture, fear of death, fear of losing friends, family, property...A most insidious form of fear is that which masquerades as common sense or even wisdom, condemning as foolish, reckless, insignificant or futile the small, daily acts of courage which help to preserve man's self-respect and inherent human dignity.

Aung San Suu Kyi fights for human rights in Myanmar. She formed the National League for Democracy. NLD won 81% of Parliament in 1990, but military refused to step down & detained Aung San. She was a political prisoner for 15yrs & refused exile. In 2015 NLD won 86% of Parliament. Aung San is now the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs & won the Nobel Peace Prize for her nonviolent efforts to bring democracy to Burma. 🙌🏽 #WonderWomanWednesday

charl08 Can recommend this one that looks at the 'ordinary' protestors in Burma. (Not ordinary at all). 8y
Suet624 Such courage and conviction this woman has. 8y

whatthelog Ooh yes- I've got letters from Burma but I haven't read it yet. Do you think I need any background knowledge to understand it properly? 8y
BookishFeminist @charl08 Oh thank you! That book looks excellent. I've seen it around but hadn't known what it was about. Burma has such an incredible political history. Stacked. 8y
BookishFeminist @Suet624 She really is courageous. 15 years as a political prisoner! Incredible. 8y
BookishFeminist @whatthelog I'm not sure as I haven't read it- it's on my tbr. But I wouldn't think you would need more than a basic understanding of what happened in Burma to lead to her imprisonment. Wikipedia would probably suffice! I can't wait to see what you think of it. 8y

Here's my #bestofnovember. I read some great books and it was a hard decision but these were my faves in each category. Mermaids will get me every time and these are awesome. For that matter, reading Meyer is like visiting old friends. Freedom From Fear was the perfect book to be reading on election night. It was so good and talks about fighting for democracy and government for the people. #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

I've been #readingNobelWomen and this one was AMAZING. It's not a memoir, it's her writing throughout her struggle. I had too many feels and thoughts to go into one post so I wrote a full review here: http://wp.me/p6D5Ti-3nD
Then I also posted what might be considered a rant but I called a stream of consciousness here: http://wp.me/p6D5Ti-3ov
The book was so good. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Came across this in my book today and had to share. It seems like the part that is hardest for government institutions or private organizations to give. How do you know what triggers this sense in each person? Still, some find it.

I kind of struggled to pull books for this challenge, which is clearly a problem. I will need to add some more to my library! #BooksSetInAsia #SeptPhotoChallenge
