Wangari Maathai was a Nobel laureate for environmental activism & her push for democracy. She led the Green Belt Movement, focused on planting trees, envt'l conservation, & women's rights in Kenya & later as a pan-African movement. She led pro-democracy efforts against the Kenyan govt when it gave public land to its supporters & led a hunger strike when it planned to build a tower in Uhuru Park. 🙌🏿

Aung San Suu Kyi fights for human rights in Myanmar. She formed the National League for Democracy. NLD won 81% of Parliament in 1990, but military refused to step down & detained Aung San. She was a political prisoner for 15yrs & refused exile. In 2015 NLD won 86% of Parliament. Aung San is now the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs & won the Nobel Peace Prize for her nonviolent efforts to bring democracy to Burma. 🙌🏽 #WonderWomanWednesday

charl08 Can recommend this one that looks at the 'ordinary' protestors in Burma. (Not ordinary at all). 8y

whatthelog Ooh yes- I've got letters from Burma but I haven't read it yet. Do you think I need any background knowledge to understand it properly? 8y
BookishFeminist @charl08 Oh thank you! That book looks excellent. I've seen it around but hadn't known what it was about. Burma has such an incredible political history. Stacked. 8y
BookishFeminist @Suet624 She really is courageous. 15 years as a political prisoner! Incredible. 8y
BookishFeminist @whatthelog I'm not sure as I haven't read it- it's on my tbr. But I wouldn't think you would need more than a basic understanding of what happened in Burma to lead to her imprisonment. Wikipedia would probably suffice! I can't wait to see what you think of it. 8y

Berta & Nicolasa Quintremán, elderly sisters, led a protest for over 10 yrs against a dam on Chile's Bío Bío River, which forced the Mapuche, one of Chile's largest indigenous groups, to leave their ancestral land. Their fight for land & human rights faced violence until they sold the land, but their legacy made new env't law in Chile & inspired indigenous ppl everywhere to fight for their home, community, & culture. ??
