A Ballad of Love and Glory: A Novel | 
I made more progress in this book last night. I‘m not enjoying it that much. It seems to be focusing a lot on the war and I don‘t like that even though I know it‘s set during a war. The man and woman in this story just met on the battlefield. I don‘t see any chemistry between them but that could change. I‘m glad this isn‘t a WWII book though because I get tired of reading those. I want to read about different time periods besides WWII.

This was my first time participating.
I started this book during my walk at the dog park today. I‘m not invested in the story yet but then again, I only listened to the first 2 chapters. I‘m not sure if I‘m going to like it because some Goodreads reviews have said that it reads like a history textbook, has a lot of battle scenes and it doesn‘t focus on the romance as much but I‘m going to read this and see if I agree with the reviews.
I have two books on my TBR with “Glory” in the title. A Ballad of Love and Glory, and Morning Glory. 🙂

I‘ve only seen 1 review so im not sure if others have t had a chance to finish. This book seems right up my alley and I want to love it but I was getting bogged down in some of the battles. I‘m about 50% through and hope to finish.

I finally finished this! I used up quite a bit of Libby karma renewing it more than once but not because of the quality of writing. The story is sad and brutal and covers a rather forgotten episode in US history.
pickThis is a slow burning novel set during the US-Mexican War in the 1840s, a war that is quite honestly not really discussed in US school history texts (other than it‘s the war before the Civil War). I had no clue about the Irish battalion that fought on the side of Mexico! I need to better educate myself!
This story follows an Irishman and a Mexican woman navigating the war and finding each other. It‘s a love story but also a war story ⬇️⬇️⬇️
pickSet in Mexico during the Mexican American War. John Riley an Irish soldier fighting on behalf of the Yankees abandons them to fight for Mexico. He is hoping to help Mexico for the freedom they desire that he was unable to get in Ireland. While he is there he falls in love with Ximena who is recently widowed. Their love is epic until he is taken prisoner and Ximena fights to save his life.

Going to my first author event in over 2 years tonight. Can't wait!!
pickThis book is an example of why I read historical fiction. I knew nothing about the American invasion of Mexico of 1846 to 1848 and this book educated as well as entertained me. I found myself Googling the real John Riley and was surprised at how much of the story was based on actual events. The story is complete with a romance (albeit a fictional one) and the violence one would expect from a war story. I gave it 4/5 stars.
