From the author of the Costa shortlisted debut, The Other Half of Augusta Hope, comes the story of one girl's journey to find her birth mother, and her realisation that mothers - and family - can be discovered in the most unexpected of places... London, 1980s. Though she has a comfortable, privileged life, Eva Martnez-Green is deeply unhappy. The only child of an emotionally absent mother and a physically absent father, Eva has grown up in a cold, unloving house. But Eva is convinced that all is not as it seems. Why are there no baby pictures of her? Why do her parents avoid all questions about her early years? When her parents' relationship crumbles, Eva begins looking for a different, better life: a proper family, a perfect mother, and, importantly, real love. Her desire to find where she belongs leads Eva on a journey spanning years and continents - and, along the way, she meets women who challenge her idea of what a mother should be, and who will change her life forever... Oh, this book! I was in pieces by page 111. Mothers, families and, most importantly, friendships all play out over the years as Eva tries to find herself, knowing she isn‘t who she‘s being told she is. I loved the quietly quirky humour and I also quite enjoy a good cry, of which there were several. Loved it 🧡

Cathythoughts Great review! Stacked. 2y

⭐⭐⭐⭐ I think I most enjoyed the child's voice in the beginning of the book, but of course she had to grow up. Pros: I liked the emotional honesty. The setting of Córdoba was beautiful and beautifully done. Cons: I can't help feeling that there was one tragedy too many. I also think that for a book about mothers, it doesn't explore the ways that relationship often looks nothing like this idealisation. A lovely book, despite the caveats, I promise!

I loved this ♥️ I loved the authors first book (Augusta Hope) and this is similar in the sense that it deals with loss, love, families and friends. There are a lot of sad themes here but all dealt with in a way that‘s not too depressing. There was one sad bit where I had to not cry on the train!
She also didn‘t go for the neat ending which I liked.

MicheleinPhilly I‘m sure I‘ll read it in 2 years. ☺️ 2y
MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain #StoryOfMyLife Are you feeling better, Helen? 2y
