This had all the ingredients of an amazing novel. Dark academia, Oxbridge, classical studies, archeology, and a trip to Italy. OK so that‘s not everybody‘s cup of tea but it‘s mine. To quote another reviewer “this book has no right to be this boring”. I found the characters infuriating. In the end it just wasn‘t for me.

I just don‘t know. The description of the book sounds very provocative. I wasn‘t in the slightest bit interested until about page 65. To tell this story one would think 🤔 making it very clear that Chris is the professor and Tessa is the student would be of top importance however it‘s written as if that‘s a side note. Yup, don‘t get involved with him just because he‘s married, Tessa! 🤦🏻‍♀️

A PhD candidate at Oxford, who studies the classics, finds out her trusted advisor has ruined her job prospects. Despite her dissertation topic, her real love is an obscure Latin poet who might be the key to her redemption.

This was brilliant and I‘m shocked I‘m the first to post about it. It‘s a modern re-imagining if Daphne and Apollo at Oxford, with a great literary adventure and a split POV between a doctoral candidate and her thesis advisor who is so evil, but thinks himself so good, that I sometimes had to walk away for a while.

Not every modern retelling needs to be The Odyssey!
