People from My Neighborhood
People from My Neighborhood: Stories | Hiromi Kawakami
6 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
From the author of the internationally bestselling Strange Weather in Tokyo, a collection of interlinking stories that masterfully blend the mundane and the mythical"fairy tales in the best Brothers Grimm tradition: naf, magical, and frequently veering into the macabre" (Financial Times). A bossy child who lives under a white cloth near a tree; a schoolgirl who keeps doll's brains in a desk drawer; an old man with two shadows, one docile and one rebellious; a diplomat no one has ever seen who goes fishing at an artificial lake no one has ever heard of. These are some of the inhabitants of People from My Neighborhood. In their lives, details of the local and everydaythe lunch menu at a tiny drinking place called the Love, the color and shape of the roof of the tax officeslip into accounts of duels, prophetic dreams, revolutions, and visitations from ghosts and gods. In twenty-six "palm of the hand" storiesfictions small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand and brief enough to allow for dipping in and outHiromi Kawakami creates a universe ruled by mystery and transformation.

Very short (~ 2 pages) stories about random people in a neighborhood, full of magical realism- not as intriguing as I hoped but still an enjoyable read 🩵 4/5⭐️

sarahbarnes I really liked this one too! 1y

I was not a fan of these short stories. There were nearly 40, but i only really found a handful interesting enough. Most of them were about 2 1/2 pages long. I didn‘t find them funny or clever- they felt like random thoughts/ideas in book form. The stories focus on a neighborhood and community. No one is really likable. I think I was expecting it to be more cohesive and heartwarming, and now I don‘t think I‘m into magic realism🤔😭

Cute short story collection about a fantastical neighborhood in Japan. The magical realism was fun and the 4-5 page looks into the neighbors‘ lives kept the pace moving. Enjoyable and good if you‘re looking for some more lighthearted Japanese literature.

Book 2 for #WomenInTranslationMonth 👍🏻
Also works for #FoodAndLit #Japan

#bookmoods

I read this one back in April and I really enjoyed these interconnecting short stories but some of them were quite #bizarre.

The title explains this book of vignettes, as we see a neighborhood through the eyes of a girl. There‘s whimsy and some magical realism here, but in the end it was a bit ho-hum for me.

BarbaraBB I liked the cover better than the book too! 3y
