An exquisite story about falling and failing in so many ways. Marta is part of a family of Czech descent living in the US. Their family is haunted for generations by a superstition related to defenestration, a deadly fall at a certain point in their life, as if it was written in their genes and as if the fall were calling to be accomplished.

"the two of us poised on a sweet precipice before falling blindly forward into the rest of our lives."

My 2 favorite things about this are the cover and the title. This is sort of a soft pick for me.

5feet.of.fury So weird story, my dad told me last week that “defenestrate” is his favorite word. 2y

"I know it's morbid, but I remember growing up with a kind of envy for that sweet, endless plummet- how your body can be given a measure of grace as it greets the air, feels its own heft and buoyancy."

I really enjoyed this story of falling in all of its forms. The gradual revelations about the characters, especially the MC and her twin, snuck up on me a bit and were executed very well. The ways we choose to see ourselves and others makes for a great unreliable narrator here. A bonus that her family came from the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia) to settle in the Midwest like mine.

What else to do when I‘m sitting (as usual) in the ballet studio parking lot? 📖

I‘m enjoying this book so far - parallels to the history of my own family make it really interesting.

Megabooks Love that word! 2y
sarahbarnes @Megabooks I know, it‘s a great one and was new to me. So interesting! 2y

Double review: One book by #Czech writer - set in France, and one by American author - set in Prague.
I‘m not Milan Kundera fan, although I find his books good, especially on the level of the individual sentences, but his overall writing style is too philosophical for me … and this book isn‘t exception. In this story he is playing with the idea of personal/intimate identity, the identity of partner/husband, how perception can reverse with the … 👇

Simona … doubts, and how the brain can creates its own reality. So-so for me 🤷🏻‍♀️
In Defenestrate we fallow twins (brother in sister) and their search for identity heavily burdened by a religious mother and by family legend(s) about the different ways of falling … the story slowly unravels through vignettes when at the end realisation hits hard. It was pick for me.

My Saturday afternoon - ebook and cherry pie with vanilla sauce. The main theme in my current read is family legacy through stories and its effects … sad story, but perfect for rainy day. #weekendReading

Andrew65 A perfect way to spend an afternoon. 3y

My current read while I‘m waiting for my dog (she is in dog grooming salon). I was intrigued by the title, and now when I‘m few pages in - the content and the writing style are promising. Defenestration is a new word for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defenestration

Tamra Wow, me too. Who knew there was a word for that act!?! 3y
ravenlee @Simona @Tamra it‘s not just an interesting word, it‘s got historic significance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defenestrations_of_Prague Apparently they decided to make something of a tradition out of it! (edited) 3y
BookwormM It is one if my favourite words along with borborygmus 3y
Simona @BookwormM Ooo … another new to me word! 3y
Simona @tamra @ravenlee What was also interesting to me is - that I was in Prague for three times (two times on guided tours), but I have never heard for defenestration before … 3y
